How far can I go into Mexico without having to report to authorities?

I know you can get in serious trouble in Mexico if they caught you there without documents. So how far can I drive without having to report, also where do you go to get a permit to drive into Mexico?

You should not enter Mexico unless allowed to at a designated crossing or reporting through customs. You will have a difficult time reentering your country of origin.

the boarder, they are just going to ask for identification because of wanted people. plus you can not fly either.

You can go about 20 miles or so with no problems. There will be a checkpoint after that and you need to have a permit to 'temporarily import' your car into Mexico. It can be done at the border and only takes a couple of hours. Costs about $100. You need insurance too which can be baught by the day at the border. Pretty cheap. The car permit is a shiny sticker that goes on the windshield and is good for 6 months. You will need to leave a deposit or a credit card in guarantee. When you leave, you need to stop at the same office for them to remove the sticker or if the 6 months pass they will charge your CC $400. You will need proof of your citizenship and the original title. Check with the Mexican consulate.

You need a visa for trips over 72 hours ... which means you can't go very far. You don't need to import your vehicle in Baja or most of Sonora.

Well, things are different in BAJA and Sonora, but in the rest of Mexico...you must stop at the border first. if you do not already have a visa, you can get a short term tourist card (good for up to 180 days) there at the border. You must go immediately to the car registration office on the other side of the border to get a car permit if you are going more than 12 miles into Mexico. Then you will be stopped at the 12 mile check stop and must show passport, visa, car permit and submit to car inspection if you happen to be selected for that. If you are driving more than 12 miles in and need that car permit, it costs about $100.00. If your car is still financed you must show a letter of permission from the financier to take the car to Mexico. Otherwise, must show the title. Also must have a credit card for them to run a copy of and save...so you can be fined $400.00 if you try to leave Mexico WITHOUT your car. Short tourist trips to border towns are easy, furthur travel takes more preparation.
