How far is it from Mexico City to Taxco?

I'll have about 2 weeks off from school in December and I'm looking for that 1 last hurrah before I go into the "real world"

How far is Mexico city from Taxco? Am I better off flying into Acapulco? I'm getting mixed info online with the airline sites I've checked and I'm not sure if I'll get the best deal with a travel agent.

I'm a budget traveller. Hostels, rooms in people's houses, etc..

If someone can point me in the right direction, I'd appreciate it.

I'd choose Taxco over Acapulco. Acapulco gets infested with Mexico City vacationers during December holidays like you can't imagine. Unless you like going to discos and parties, I find Taxco to be far more interesting.

I'd go by bus as well, I doubt the bus trip would cost you over 30 dollars. Don't know any hostels there (I always did the stay at Cuernavaca visit Taxco for a few hours during the day kind of deal), but the town is cheap.

While you're there, you could try an iguana tamale. Taxco is famous for it's regional pozole and the regional lemon flavored Yoli soda is great stuff. Better than Sprite.

Taxco is about 2 hours from Mexico City, by bus. The buses leave from the south terminal Taxqueña in Mexico City. They are called Futura and Costa. Taxco is a beautiful town, sorry I cannot tell you about hostels, but I am sure you can research something over the Internet.
It is definetely closer to Mexico City than to Acapulco. I guess you can even leave early in the morning from Mexico, visit Taxco, and return at night.
Another alternative is go to Cuernavaca (1 hr in bus from Mexico City), stay there and visit Taxco for the day (1hr from Cuernavaca to Taxco). Cuernavaca is a nice town, larger than Taxco, with many hotels.

Its about 2.5 hours. Really gorgeous, especially at night. but its not as much fun as acapulco. Its also more historical than acapulco. In terms of hostels and hotels there are plenty but they get filed quickly especially during december in holiday season. Good luck have fun.
