How hard is it for an american living in mexico?

is american money worth more there? i want to move to a resort town. like puerto vallarta or cabo. how far would 30 g's get me? and is there any work? im a skilled technician. is it legal for an american to work in mexico?
Additional Details
i want to live in a tropical area because i hate winter. but it seems anyplace that is tropical also means thers no work. im a heating and AC tech. i figured i could get a job at a hotel or something. i thought about cali or florida, but cali is too expensive to live, and florida always has rain and hurricanes

G's on vacation (FL) =D
Well it depends. I know the dollar is about $10 pesos but that doesnt necesarilly mean it's cheap to live there, espcially since PV is a tourist attraction. You have a huge advantage though... you are american. Pretty much any american could start a business there. If you become bilingual you'll be earning more. Im not sure if technicians are in demand...however i'd get a 2 year degree in tourism before you leave for Mexico. Or if you have any kind of degree you'll get hired over someone who's had 12yrs experience in whatever field you decide to go into. In mexico they rather have someone who has studied in the US since it's a superpower. I'd learn enough to carry on a conversation at least. If you need someone to practice with i can help you with that.

1.-Depends of what much money you have, if you don´t you might get a little trouble to find a job, because you need to speak Spanish, everything depends if you also have a degree.
That would make your life a little bit easier.
2.-Yes American Dollar will save you.
3.-I would suggest you Puerto Vallarta, if you watch your dollar, you can easily with that money live good, depends if you buy or rent a house.
4.-Yes...but those kind of jobs are what i called "just for tourist jobs".Maybe you can run your own business and help Mexicans to employ them, but If you want something else. like working for a big company, You might need to find a job in Mexico City, Guadalajara or Monterrey.
5.-Yes it is legal, but you have to arrange yourself at the immigration offices in the States in order that they give you a work permit and a permanent residence permit
If you really would like to stay in Mexico, you have to demonstrate it. And maybe you would get marry to a beautiful mexican gorgeous ;)
So good luck i hope this would be helpful for you
Everything its possible bambino!

First come down on a visitor stamp then look for work now you can get your work visa once your have a job postion
the work visa is good for a yr.
The food is not as rich as American food. If you eat like a local it won´t cost much we have a taco stand down the street from us and for $2 bucks or 20 pesos you can get 4 taco carne (beef) with queso ( cheese)
But if u want stuff like tide 110 loads it will cost you 488.90 pesos or $45 dallors
on the bank today it says that the peso is only .27 cent less then the dallor
When we move down here last yr it was great because the pesos was . 42 cents less then the dallor
the American dollar is weak right now
I live about an hour south of monterrey and you would be about 8 hrs S.W. of me
let me know if this helped

not hard. loads of americans arrive here in puerto vallarta everyday and they stay 2 spend the rest of their lives in here...
is pretty amazing, but you've obviously got to know someone in here. weather is cool... 320 sunny days a year... the other 45 are set on july, or august = rain season...
from november to march/april humpback whales come near the shores from canada, they give birth in our warm waters....
most people speak at least basic english... and we're well known to be the friendliest city in the worl... though im not so sure about that, we are pretty friendly.
salary is not so good. but you're an american and we get our money from tourism... so we could do incredibly well at real state or something like that... they do make good money.
is not as cheap as most people think. food is great. beaches are incredibly nice, specially in the sorroundings... (yelapa, mita, sayulita - small surfing town-
in general is not hard living here... your money is worth ten times more than ours... 1 dollar = 10 pesos... rents are average 700 us per month (nice apartment, probably pool-condo)... you can get great places for less money if you know wheret o search.
you can work herein mexico as a techinician.. but you've got to get and fm3 (sore of a permission to work here, but is easy to get, no problem there)...
life is relax... people is incredibly open minded... but we are also a gay destination... so i dont know if that bothers you.
(not a gay destination, but we do welcome gay people) probably 20 %of the tourists are gay. lots of tours and things to do. goof night life.
you would do fine in puerto vallarta.
i've been in cabo... is a little more expensive than puerto vallarta.... but its more industrial... there's very few beaches... and people's always trying to get something out of you.. or sell you something, it its really pretty though!...
sorry about my english, still trying to learn how to write correctly...

Hello.

Well, since you are air condition and heater technician, I'm pretty sure you could very easy find job at México. When you are saying you are heater technician, do you mean steam machines (I don't know the english word for "caldera")? If so, more work for you here. There are not many technicians in that (cooling and heating systems).

I guess that in a touristic area the hotels will need someone on maintenance: they have air condition huge systems, big frigorifics (for food!), steam machines ("calderas") to heat the water. I'm SURE you can star a Maintenace Company in a touristic area. 30 K is more than enough to star your business (you could even need very few thing; but you know that), you could also contact some companies and become dealer to parts in frigorifics, air conditioning, heaters (or steamers or "calderas", I don't know the correct word)

JJ, I own a timeshare in Puerto Vallarta, and I absolutely love it. The town is becoming "americanized" which I dont know if that's a good thing. A lot of corporate america is showing up there: Home Depot, Costco, Walmart, and alot of fast food. I have talked to americans that have relocated there and they have no regrets. The people I have talked to work for the Mayan Palace. With you being a HVAC tech, I would think that skill would be in demand down there. I would make sure you know some Spanish however, I always wish I knew more whenever I go down there.

You're $$$ is worth less as we speak.

Beside that, get used to making NOTHING.

On the bright side, it'll be so beautiful you might not care.

Make sure you can read and write Spanish before you go. 30 K will get you 2 years or so...you'd have to hook up with a company down there...try craigslist....I just got back yesterday...love the place but i wouldn't want to work there.

I am going to guess that your not to familar with mexico, the exchange rate is like 1 dollar/10.8 pesos. Dont let the prices fool you, its still 40 pesos for a burger.
To work in Mexico, I think you need a work visa as well. If you have money, dont flaunt it. The last thing you need is people thinking your rich, you'll become a target.

This might sound dumb, But you do know spanish right?

I would assume it legal ... why wouldn't it be...But as for much work i don't think so... I think thats the reason why so many mexiacan come here to live in america and "jump the boarder becuase they want better life and oppertunity" but considering your a skilled technichian and m ost mexicans don't have very high education you may actually find work in field specifically for people who have higher degrees.

princess annie
Money is worth more there but why would you want to live there?

is really easy to get a work permission, you just need an id and your whateveryouare title or certificate. you can rent a good place with 30 g for about like 3 years
