Well, Cancun seems to be doing pretty well with the repairs, but it was hit pretty badly. Most of their beaches were swept away, and sadly, after an expensive repair program, they have just been obliterated once more by high winds.

However, the Mayan Riviera, with places like Playa del Carmen is still gorgeous and suffered little damage from the hurricanes. You'd never even know it happened. They have amazing hotels and pretty good shopping. Also, the atmosphere is very pleasant.

And yes, Cancun is but 45 minutes away, so you don't have to miss out on either, but you get the benefit of guaranteed gorgeous beaches and hotels.

I think you mean Hurricane Wilma!

I edit a blog about the ongoing recovery...

It's all there, really...

I agree with Jemiwemii

Playa Del Carmen is very quiet, beautiful and romantic setting. Also no beach vendors allowed in so your not being approached every 5 minutes for "Limon ! Coca Cola! Pina ! " Gold, silver, braids etc etc...

that sounds very nice. you'll have a beach, luxury, so that you can forget that horrible Katrina. I'm so sorry you guys had to go through it. i personally wouldn't have known how to handle myself if something like that happened. if something like that would have happened here in Maryland, and i got out of it alive, i would have gone back to Paris. not thinking twice.

I definitely don't agree with y_e_n_o_t.

If you're heart is set on Mexico for your honeymoon, you should go to Alcapulco or Cabo San Lucas. I went to Cancun in November and many hotels and activities were still closed down for repair. Also, at some of the hotels, the beach is shut off to the public. And there are a lot of trees down.

But if you don't want to take my word, I read an article in the Express Newspaper (a mini paper of the Washington Post for commuters) that said there were more contruction workers in Cancun this Spring Break than spring breakers. It also said that Cancun has gone from the #2 spring break spot to #8 because of the hurricane damage.

HA GO 70 MILES SOUTH TO A PLACE CALLED AKUMAL ITS THE BEST VERY SMALL AND CLOSE TO COZAMEL AND VERY NEAR RUINS CHECK IT PN LINE VERY VERY VERY COOL

y_e_n_o_t
I looks exactly as if it never happened. It is still very beautiful and would deffinatly recommend it for a vacation spot.

For a honeymoon I would recommend something a little less touristy, Bermuda for example. It is freaking awesome.
