How is the ocean water in Cabo San Lucas Mexico? |
I am Staying there at the end of July at the Riu Santa Fe and I was wondering if I will be able to swim there. I have heard it has a big under tow and there have been a lot of accidents in the water there |

Hola. Cabo San Lucas is on the Pacific Ocean and for most times of the year it can be very volitile with strong undertows, roge waves, and rip tides. Nothing like the eastern side of Mexico (cancun) on the Carribean.
The beach in front of the Riu Sante Fe can be a little rough. You are better to go to Medano just down the way or over to lovers/divorce beach if you want to swim, snorkel. There are also prime snorkelling beaches a little farther out called Chileno and Santa Maria and there are many tours there.
I am a very strong swimmer and go swimming almost daily at the roughest beach in Cabo (called Costa Azul) and I have to admit I've been clobbered a couple of times. I can see how accidents have happened to those who may not realize it or are not strong swimmers. |

the water is gorgeous, but most beaches are unswimmable, they do have surfing there, but I do not what time of year that is, but when I was there a few weeks ago noone even tried to swim in it and just enjoyed the view |

I have been to Cabo twice..
the best beaches there were Santa Maria bay and Chileno beach
both have clear blue water and are very calm
also both have areas where you can snorkel with a lot of pretty fish
both of these beaches are fairly close to where your hotel is..
the beach that your hotel is on (Medano beach) is rough in some parts and calm in others..the further you walk towards the marina the calmer it gets. |

just got back. no swimming in front of rui. but take a water taxi to lovers beach, across from santa fe, for 10 dollars. of you walk down the beach towards the marina, there is swimming areas there. the water is cold. ( it was the end of march)they said a person drowned last week. so be aware of the undertow. |

Some beaches have Red Flags everywhere telling you to stay out of the water, but 5 minutes drive away there is perfectly safe water. It depends exactly where you are, so research the place you are staying, go to their website, and you should be able to find out more than what I can tell you. The water is pretty nice at the places that you can swim, kind of cold, but not freezing! Hope this helps! |

Lex and CaboChic are pretty good with their responses.
Any beach from Cabo north to Todas Santos can be very hazardous because of the very strong undertows, deserted beaches, no lifeguards, etc....
Beaches on the Sea side (Cortez) are usually safer....I see surfers all the time halfway to San Jose....Santa Maria Bay is a great spot for swimming and snorkling..... |
