You could live on $800 and less a month in Mexico. If you only spent $800 a month, you could live for 2 years, $19,200 with $800 left over. Otherwise just a year if you spend more. Baja is American friendly so is Cancun and Acapulco. If you live in either Cancun or Acapulco on $20,000 you will only be able to live a year on this amount. |

The two largest concentrations of ex-Pats are in San Miguel de Allende and along the north shore of Lake Chapala near Guadalajara. SME tends to be a bit more expensive than Lakeside but both areas have large ex-pat communities with mostly U.S. and Canadians. Coastal cities tend to be a bit more expensive.
I would say if you live very simply with no car, maybe $1000 a month. That is considering an American standard of housing rather than a really inexpensive cheapest you could find place.

Why is it that most americans barely go to Tijuana and already say "they've been to Mexico"? Tijuana is not Mexico.
You could probably live quite a while. There are markets over here that sell food for pretty cheap and if you know how to cook, it will definately save you a whole lot of money.
If you know how to cook : 8 - 12+ months
If you don't : 4-8 months
Those estimates come with all house services included (Phone, internet, cable, electricity etc.)
American friendly parts would probably include the Mayan Riviera. People there are very friendly and the place is more than beautiful. Merida has some very friendly people and all the advantages of America (A/C, Malls, Restaurants, etc.). The town part of cancun can be a bit different from Merida but the Hotel Zone makes up for it. Playa Del Carmen can also be a good place. |

Mikey says minimum $1000 a month. You will really be just scratching by on that. You also have not considered your immigration status called FM3 card or FM2 card - near impossible to get.
You do not qualify for the FM2 card.
Please read thru this entire website. Alot of info. Also read thru the FM3 section.
Mexico is kinda harsh and here in Acapulco I know of 11 people ( expats) in 2 years that thought this was the life for them and since have determined otherwise.

Hmm.. Probably a while, depending on where in Mexico you live. I know that I went to a "fine dining" place at a border town in Mexico and spent $19 on four alcoholic drinks & two meals. Some stuff is cheap, some isn't. I wouldn't really recommend living in Mexico though.. It really isn't all that great. |

I wouldnt really recomment living in Mexico, when they find out you are from the US, they try to take advantage of you and start treating you weird, i guess the most American friendly part would have to be Cancun or Acapulco, but beware, those are expensive zones. If I were you, i wouldnt go to the capital (Mexico DF) unless you went to visit for a max of 1 week |
