I would recommend never to drink the tab water regardless of how long do you intend to live there. Almost all restaurants and many houses use either purified water (bottled water) or some kind of filtering systems. The standards of the city supplier and the buildings piping's are not the best and are hardy ever inspected.
However it is a good idea to get your system familiar with the "local" bacteria. A very good way to do it is by eating natural yogurt. It will help you to develop and maintain a set of "good" bacteria. It is not only the water that will give you problems. Hopefully after a couple of years you will get an upset stomach only every other week. LOL I am just kind of jocking.
I was born in Mexico City and lived there for 20 years. I moved out for almost 20 and when I came back I would get sick almost every other day. After a few years only every week. But I was eating out most of the days. My siblings that have live there all their lives still get sick often.
Have fun and enjoy your new adventure. |

I'm moving to Guatemala in a few weeks! Good question!!!
I'll drink bottled water (which happens to come from Mexico... Ha Ha!) for a few months probably (at least!), then try boiling some water and mixing little bits at a time. Then slowly add more, then mix non-boiled. Then slowly mix more until I am used to it... if I make it that far! Have a great time!
And do be careful! It did make me quite sick the first time, and a little sick the second... |

There are people still out there that think Mexico does not know how to purify water. Even if they didn't they could easily afford to hire American engineers. If it bothers you take bottles water. Drink in restuarents etc. where tourists go. Drink a little Mexican water 1 oz. then increase for 4-5 days. You will not get sick in any event.
Impure water in Mexico is a fantancy of mid-western WASP's |

To be honest my family who lives in Mexico doesnt even drink the water. They buy 5 gallons from a guy who delivers it on a 3 wheel bike. Its very inexpensive too. Good Luck~ |

it's NOT SAFE to drink the water!! mexicans DO NOT drink the water! they don't just tell tourist not to drink it, they tell everyone! bottled water, and water delivery services are very cheap in mexico. there's no reason you need to, or would want to drink the tap water. |

i just got back monday being down in southern mexico for 11 days and have found out that water can never be digested because there are way too much bacterial crap in it and such that until there are more aquifers you can never drink it. |

Unless they re-do the water and sewer systems, it will never be safe to drink. The sewage water leaches into the tap water; if you drink the water, you are risking getting bacterial infections and Hepatitis C.
There are drops you can buy to purify the water to use for washing fruits and vegetables. You can use the water for cooking, as long is it boils for at least 10 minutes.
For drinking and toothbrushing, use bottled water. |

I live in Mexico, you do not drink from the sink unless you have a filtering system which most houses do not, you call one of the water companies or go to a tienda (store) and you get water in big jugs, so do not get scared I have lived down here sense I was 6 (5 years) and I nor anybody I know has goten sick because of the water, so just relax and do not drink the sink water unless its purifide.
I live in San Miguel De Allende its nice you should cheek it out some time. |

Mexican Natives don't even drink their own water anymore. Since the invention of bottled water people have stopped drinking it. The entire system would need to be replaced to fix it. My dad lives there and they have a truck that drives through town every few days and sees 5 gallon bottles for under $1 American. |
