Hmmm.... there are a number of categories that you need to consider. First, there are retirees. Then you have expats (US citizen working in Mexico, often with their families), missionaries of all types, teachers of English in the numerous bilingual schools, plus US citizens with Mexican heritage who return to Mexico because of family connections or other reasons.
A 2002 article by Carl Franz and Lorena Havens (cited below) talked about 1 million US citizens being in Mexico! But the US government actually has little idea of the total numbers -- as the second article points out. The US does not keep track of expats very well, so it is difficult to give an exact total.
But in brief.... it is most likely MUCH higher than many of us think! |
