How much cash (dollars) should I take for a Cancun trip?

How much Cash should I take for a trip to Cancun? I have a credit card which I can use but am not sure if I should. Where should I convert the dollars to pesos?

Well it depends on what you all want to do and what is in your budget. CancĂșn can be pricey and you will go through it fast. Plus, you are going to see things you want to buy and things you are going to want to do so I would take as much as you can afford. You will be safer to use your credit card, but I warn you make sure you call your credit card company BEFORE you leave and let them know you are going out of town because if they see a lot of charges on it from a foreign country they will shut it down on you. Happened to a buddy of mine. You can exchange almost anywhere in CancĂșn. It starts at the airport and you can also exchange at the front desk of your resort. They have ATM's all over where you can get money from your cards into pesos, which is the best bet if you want a good exchange rate.
Depending on how long you are going for...I would take atleast $500 cash and a credit card, but like I mentioned make sure you call them and tell them you are going to Mexico. Also, keep in mind CancĂșn is a tourist destination and you CAN use USD (if that is what you have) in CancĂșn. You will get your change back in Pesos though. Good luck and enjoy your time!!!

The less cash you have on you the better. We can't really tell you how much cash to take because we do not know your budget or what you plan on doing. I went to Cancun last February and we mostly used our credit card for everything. Cash was used for taxi and bus rides. You can convert your money at the hotel you are staying, the rate changes every day, keep that in mind. You can also ask the person who changes your money to explain to you what the exchange is, because it does change daily. It is easy to get ripped off so make sure you understand the money situation if you do not then you will most likely get taken advantage of, that's why I suggest the credit card when it is possible.

ATM machines !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Don't use a credit card in Mexico except to pay hotel and rental car

The last time I went I took $900. This allowed me to do one big tourist event, and some of the smaller thrills. Also I had enough for shopping. This does not cover hotel room. Also, I always exchanged my money at the hotel, but look around your first day and see which one gives a better exchange rate.

I used my Mastercard in Cancun. It paid it correctly. I brought back my receipt just in case.

Credit cards are very safe and the way to go in my opinion for any dining out, shopping etc. You really do not need a whole lot of cash but personally I always bring more then enough cash as you can always bring it back with you. Most resorts have in room safes so keeping cash safe at the resorts is usually not an issue.

You can usually obtain the best exchange rates at banks. I would avoid exchanging at the airport or the many money kiosks. There are banks on the main street Blvd. Kukulcan as well as inside most malls.

In summary I would personally bring $1000 cash and take a couple credit cards with you. And as someone mentioned it is a good idea to call your credit card companies in advance and inform them of your travel dates and destination.

Enjoy!
