How much is a hotel room in a non-popular part of Mexico?

Want to travel Mexico. Don't want to stay in rich, fancy, gringo-infested parts. I want to see the culture.

You can visit the state of San Luis Potosi (I know nobody has heard of it )
The State of SLP (San Luis Potosi) is huge and has many different attractions and is not very expensive you can get a nice decent hotel room for about $60 a night. (http://www.allmexicohotels.com/san-luis-potosi/san-luis-potosi/ you can also browse this website for hotels in different cities in Mexico).
You can spend a couple of days or so in the city of San Luis Potosi and then travel to "La Huasteca Potosina" where you can camp, visit some great waterfalls, swim, dive in "La Media Luna", hike and rapell down "El Sotano de las Golondrinas", visit some ancient ruins built in the jungle. Afterwards you can travel north to visit "Real De Catorce" (where the movie "The Mexican" was filmed) a trully magical town.
Tons of different things to do in this beautiful state, check it out: http://www.descubresanluispotosi.com/web/index.html (Click on "ENTER" on the bottom right side)
Another great thing about SLP is its location, there are many different cities to visit that are just 2hrs away (driving) like Guanajuato, San Miguel de Allende, Queretaro, Zacatecas, Aguascalientes... so you can visit for the day and drive back to SLP to spend the night.

There are also many great Cities/States to visit like Puebla, Zacatecas, Jalisco, Veracruz, Oaxaca, Chiapas, and Yucatan (among others) Almost everywhere you go in Mexico you will find tourists, as long as you don't plan to visit Cancun during spring break I think you won't have a problem.
Enjoy Mexico!!!

You can find some nice (but basic) pensions or hostels for less then $10 a night. Check out the Lonely Planet (or Let's Go) guides for their suggestions.

worry
right now you can find an american standart hotel almost everywhere in Mexico...for the same rate than here. But, if you are not going to go to a touristic place, probable you can find a good dial for $30. Yes, "Let's go" it can helps.

You might want to check out Huatulco. The best kept secret in Mexico. It's the best of both worlds, Old and New Mexico. Spend the day in La Curcita or Santa Cruz, take an overnite trip to Oaxaca city, it's the Art capital of Mexico. You will not be dissapointed. Beautiful Bays, Friendly people. Very rich in Indian culture.
