First of all Mexico is not a South American country. It is in the Americas, North America, Latin America depends on what your definition of a continent is. As for what you can get for a $ depends entirely on where you are. If you're in the business district of Mexico city or a tourist area like Cozumel and Cabo San Lucas you're lucky if you can get a bottle of water. However if you go to a small town where they have seen very few foreigners you may get a meal.
As for South America, you are talking about a whole continent. Even in one country say the U.S. what you can get in NYC, LA, Main Street USA in the Magic Kingdom is completely different from what you can get in Small town in West Virginia or the Midwest. Some cities you may be able to get a couple of Tacos Pescados (fish Tacos) in other places you may get a cookie. |

In Cancun, a bus ride in the hotel zone for 65 cents and change. Quite a bargain, don't you think?
About 11 pesos to the dollar |

well a dollar in mexico will buy you not so much, about probably a drink with some chips, but perhaps it's not the same for countries in South America, but perhaprs Mexico is not in South America, Mex. is still part of North America....but oh well thats what i know. |

I can't give you recent specific examples, but I have a few
general tips to offer. It has been my experience that in resort tourist towns they have one price list for locals, and another higher list for Americans for the same products and services.
See what others are paying before you order, and don't accept a higher price. In addition to the common knowledge that great bargains can be made on jewelry and prescription drugs, you may want to buy only Mexican made common products like soda, beer, etc., as U.S. name brand items carry a very high import tax! "Don't drink the water"! |
