How safe is Mexico for a tourist?

Backpacking in Mar 09, wanted to start tour in Mexico.
Or should I just get a taste, play it safe and start in El paso?

I've driven through 18 of the 31 states in Mexico and never had a problem. You'll find that 99.9 percent of the Mexicans are nice helpful people. The other .1 percent work in the drug economy or are petty thieves. A money belt that you can wear under your clothes is a good investment/ it will give you peace of mind knowing that your passport and 90 percent of you money is somewhere a pickpocket can't lift it.
As stated above, I'd pass through the border areas as quickly as possible and enjoy everything else that Mexico has to offer.

Yes, Mexico is safe for tourists.

Don't listen to what someone who lives near Mexico but never goes there because they are afraid has to say. Mexico has many different areas and regions. Some are safer than others. The border cities can be a little rough around the edges, but you probably won't have any problems. Most of the violence is drug related. Just take basic precautions. I think that any big city in the US is much more dangerous than Mexico City, for example. Don't miss Mexico City. It's great!

Batgirl7, you are foolish. I said what I feel about some of the people in the US. Many other Americans feel the same as me. That doesn't make them or me any less American. Your info is trash. I doubt you have ever been to Mexico, except maybe to Revolution Ave in TJ...

I really like the fact that you are so ignorant about the world and showed it in your childish post. Don't come on here and give some second hand, "I heard from a friend of a friend that in Mexico..." If you haven't lived it, don't repeat it.

And at least Mexico isn't invading other countries, it's economy is doing better than the US (no housing crisis) in many areas and there are no terrorists or whatever the US has going on. The biggest problem Mexico has is a drug war fueled by the US demand for illegal drugs and the US selling high-powed military style weapons to Mexican drug cartels. The greatest peace maker himself said "Think twice before you say to your brother, look at the speck in your eye when there is a plank in your's."

been there many times. It's cool, just be sure to only use public transportation. I wouldn't hitchhike.

You'll be safer in interior Mexico than you would be in El Paso! You should be fine as long as you don't get involved with shady people, for example, drug runners. Have a great time and enjoy the people , sites, and food!

Chico "hot"
Is safe for tourist. You see lot of @$#$# in the press but that is just a drug war, stay away from that you should be OK. IF you look for trouble, you will get it .

Depend on where you are, if you go visit mexico city its not gonna be very safe but you can go to places like san miguel de allende which is a very safe touristic city.

I live a few hours from the Mexican border, and I would not go there. There are a lot of troubles with drug wars close to the border. Some Americans from here have gone to Mexico ( they spoke Spanish) and they were kidnapped, some were held for ransom and some disappeared. Friends whose parents originally came from Mexico won't even cross into Mexico.

As safe as it is in Southern California. It's basically the same place but seriously do NOT go there. Do NOT listen to Prof Gringo's answer! His nickname itself is a derogatory reference (aka mean insult) to white people. He even insulted U.S.A. in the source portion of his answer (to which I say if you don't like it here Prof Gringo" LEAVE) Seriously though, people ARE being kidnapped and held for ransom there and even here in Southern CA and being taken to Mexico and held there for ransom. They can spot a tourist a thousand miles away so even if you speak Spanish they'll know you are a tourist and will likely be a target. Do NOT go there.
