How safe is it to drive from Mexico to Canada and what is the best route to take ??

My husband and I are spending some time on the Cancun side of Mexico and are thinking of buying a car here, then driving it all the way back to Canada, maybe hitting spots on the way like Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta.
Then up to the USA via LA,(side trip to Vegas)then up the coast to British Columbia ,Canada.
The US is fine, been there done that, but i am worried a bit about saftey on the back roads of Mexico.
Has anyone made this trip?
Are there still random military stops along the way?
Is it safe to make the trip at all?
What is route to take to the USA border?
Can we buy a car here in Mexico, then import it to Canada, via the states?
Where do we insure?Canada or Mexico??
HELP!!

Don't worry about Mexico. Roads are safe, there is plenty of food and many friendly people. I'd be worried of the US!!! The cold climate, the unfriendly people, roads with only 55 miles speed limit and the FOOD!!!! What an aweful food they have. You may stash some good Mex food and bring in it with you (no meat though, against the US customs law) to survive the transit to Canada.
Good luck, sounds like you're having lots of fun.

Ok. First of all let's remember that every car made in Mexico is by a foreign company. Ford, GM, Volkswagen and Nissan have plants in the country and a big part of what they make is for export to the US. So, obviously they have all the requirements asked by the US government regarding environmental and security issues.

I think that the safest route is going thru the pay road to Mexico City, then to Queretaro, then to San Luis Potosi, then to Monterrey and then to Laredo Texas. Driving to Tijuana it's not taht dangerous anymore (obviously I'm talking of driving by pay roads! never take the free roads.) But remember that if you drive to Tijuana you'll have to cross the Sonora desert which is a very difficult environment.

I repeat: Don't drive thru the free roads (Autopista Libre) always do it thru the pay roads (Autopista de Cobro) they are secure and there's road help in case of a car desperfection.

You might want to check the vehicle registration laws first. Don't know about Canada, but here in the US, you can't register a Mexican-built car because it doesn't have the pollution control or safety equipment on it that is required in the US (things like safety glass, catalytic converter, and so on).
Insurance is tricky, too. A US insurance policy won't cover you in Mexico. I don't know if the reverse is true.

Just a thought...
Good luck. I live in El Paso, and I would consider buying a Mexican car and registering it in Mexico, because it makes driving into the Mexican interior much easier.
P.S. I know of one more-or-less-permanently manned federal police checkpoint on Mexican highway 45 between Chihuahua and Ciudad Juarez.
P.P.S. At least in the state of Chihuahua, Highway 45 is quite good and secure. The tolls are a bit steep, but the toll receipt says it includes car insurance while on the toll road, and emergency repair service, provided by a government group called the Angeles Verdes, can be a life saver. Back roads range from bad to frightening and should be avoided.

Take the interstate 5.

You better ask the Mexican government all of this first.
No way the US or Canadian will override this, we're allies.

I have lived along the Texas-Mexico border since 1967, have many relatives in Mexico, and have traveled extensively there myself. I would NOT do that anymore. It is terribly dangerous now.

Take Interstate 5 from Tijuana to Vancouver. You will see some of the best sites along the West Coast. Yes, its safe to do so.
