How should I pack for Cancun in August?

It's a gazillion degrees and humid. There is no place at all that won't allow shorts, skirts, tanks, flips. Bring your lightest-weight clothing and things you will be comfortable wearing. Air-conditioned resort restaurants may be cool in the evenings, so you may need a sweater. Shorts and swimsuits for day. Capris and little dresses for evening. Heels are crazy here, so bring only comfy flips or wedges.

If you are staying at a resort, they usually have washer/dryers in the room. When I go, I always stop at the local Walmart or Chedraui (a middle east version of walmart) and buy laundry detergent as well as groceries, shampoos, soap... basically stuff that takes up room in my suitcase! They carry many of the American brands, or purchase Mexican brands for even less. I try to pick up trial size and throw them away when I leave, As for the clothes I take, I try to pack stuff that is light, hopefully wrinkle free. I take 2-3 bathing suits, 2 flip flops, 2-3 shorts and t's and maybe 1-2 skirts or dresses. I also take work out clothes including tennis shoes. Most hotels provide hair dryers. I don't pack straightners or curling irons because it is sooo humid and we usually swim and shower so often I wear my hair "natural". Besides, if I fix my hair, it goes frizzy fast. Invest in mouse and clips.
I also take 1 beach towel, a book, my ATM, one credit card for emergencies, passport, sunscreen, sunglasses. I also highly recommend not carrying too much cash. That's just commen sense at home or if travelling. Plus if you use your ATM as needed, you will recieve the highest exchange rate. I also recommend taking a small supply of tylenol or motrin. That stuff is hard to find over there in case you may need it.
I wouldn't worry about carrying a sweater unless you chill easily. It's going to be hot there, day and night.
Just remember, if there is anything you might need while over there, Walmart and Chedraui are always close by. They are located both in Cancun and Playa de Carmen. Cancun has many American shops, overpriced of course. Playa de Carmen is always cheaper. Take the local bus for less than a dollar per person or a Taxi for dollars more.

Just bring your beach/pool attire for most of the day. A nice outfit for dinner and if you plan on going out to the clubs/bars at night bring something nice to wear then. I just got back a week ago and it all fit in my suitcast and I had just enough outfits for my trip. Don't bring any pants (unless you get cold at night) because it is way too hot! Have fun....wish I was going back.

Clothing
Travelers should be conscientious of cultural differences and pack accordingly. Keep in mind that some religious sites require that shirts cover the shoulders and arms, and do not allow short skirts or flip-flops.
Comfortable walking shoes and one pair of nicer shoes
Shirts (short and long sleeved)

Dressier outfit (reserved for a special night out)

An alarm clock (many hotel rooms won't have one)
An adaptor/converter (available at travel stores)
Camera with ample batteries (batteries can be expensive abroad)
