I recommend AGAINST using a credit card. Here in Mexico or anywhere else. Credit card cloning is a big business, and if it happens to you, it can be a nightmare. The easiest way is to just go to an ATM machine (They are everywhere now days) preferably at a bank during business hours. (In case the machine eats your card) You can take out up to $4,000 Pesos at a whack (Under $400 US) then use cash for diner, shopping, taxis, etc. You will get a very good exchange rate and if you take the max every couple days you won't worry if they charge you $1.00 or $1.50 to use it. DON"T take out $50 Pesos to buy that shirt, then later $200 for diner. That could add up.

Oh, and let your bank know you are going to Mexico so they won't think you have been cloned and cut your card off in the middle of your vacation! The $1.00 US bills for tipping USED to be a big deal, but it is not any longer.

some credit cards will charge you international transaction fees. i recommend using your debit card to get pesos out of an ATM. this ususally gives you the best exchange rate, and the fees are not high.

C/C get pesos out of the ATM machines and save money, also bring at least $100 in dollar bills for tips, works well. Have a great time

We've experienced credit card fraud in Mexico. Our bank covered the charges, but it was a hassle as we had to cancel that account and get another card. Having said that, it is handy to get cash from the ATM using the credit card. And you hotel may require one.

If you take travelers checks, be sure to take your passport (picture ID) with you when you cash them. A couple of years ago, the bank where I cashed travelers checks would cash no more than $200.00 US at a time - may or may not still be the case.

My experience is always may with credit card for most things. The exchange rate is much better....you will be pleasantly surprised when you get your credit card bill. Have some cash on hand to tip and to buy those inexpensive souvenirs. Oh..with regards the suggestion of cloning...check with your credit card company before your go...you will find that you will be protected.

You can pay with creditcard or cash or travelercheques.

Actually I would prefer travelercheques ( issued by americanexpress or visa).

If You want to use ATM, make sure to stay away from the ATM in the romatic zone ( Center of Vallarta ). Use the ones in the mayor banks only.

During the last 60 days a number of ATM frauds are reported by tourists and citizens as well.

Please see http://www.puerto-vallarta-blog.com to read about the frauds.
