How would a black woman in Mexico be treated? |
I know some Latin men can be overly firtatious. I also know there are not a lot of black people. However, I was thinking about going to Mexico. I would just like to wonder what to expect. |

I live in Mexico and I can tell you from my experience that black women are treated very well in Mexico. Everyone, men and women, act very well toward them. If you come to Mexico, you should have no problem. |

Actually, in some regions of México, there are a lot of black people. For example, in the coastal city of Veracruz, the black population is 15%. As for discrimination or anything like that, nearly impossible. Most Mexican people are about half white and half native american (60/40), so they're used to different races. I don't think you should have to worry about anything! Yes, Latin men can be very flirtatious, but you won't get more than a whistle. Plus, the only place in Mexico I've seen someone whistle at a lady, that was in Mexico City. |

nniighhttsswiingss is a total ignorant:
I really wish to know what he wanted to mean with the mexicans "arent very educated as to what being black is"
I need to remain him that Mexico abolished the slavery many, many, many years before the USA.
I'm mexican and EVERYBODY WILL TREAT YOU VERY WELL, we are very warm people. Perhaps some people look at you with some curiousity because here aren't too many black people like in the USA. But curiosity isn't racism. |

you will be treated very well, very politely. as far as your comment on latin men being flirtatious? honestly, i wouldn't worry about it at all. seriously. although some men who don't get out a lot may be fasinated by the blonde hair and super white white skin (because it is kind of weird)...they are quite used to dark colored hair and darker skin. so while you may be one of very few black people, your characteristics would not be so "strange" as to attract stares or unwanted attention.
but no, don't worry about any discrimination at all. you will be treated very kindly. |

Very well, just like any other tourist. Come to sunny Mexico!!! |

As everybody said, you won't have a problem, specially in the tourist areas. They will treat you very well because you are a tourist and they'd love for you to come back and recommend the country to others in the U.S. So please go and have lots of fun!!! |

Yes, some Latin men can come off as overflirtatious. As far as any potential discrimination you may receive-don't worry. There aren't that many black people in the area of Mexico I visit. For the most part people tend to be welcoming. Just make sure to be yourself and don't be standoffish. A plus is if you can talk Spanish. |

You will be welcome and treated very well, with respect. |

Contrarily to what the poorly educated nniighhttsswiingss tells you and backing up what Ja R said, in Mexico people is rarely judged by their skin color since we also have many different skin tones and colors. Besides, tourists are always very well received in Mexico. Our country is and always has been open to all countries, cultures, religions and ideas as long as they don't hurt others. Have a nice trip. |

well, since there isnt a lot of education about race and its related issues (racism, insensitivity, how certain words make you feel or certain questions) then i would be prepared to find a lot of ignorant people about what it is to be black in the united states and in the world.
Believe me, there willl be people that will call you negrita. Which is not a bad thing; Im from latin america and we call black people that all the time. It is not meant as an insult; in fact, it means "little black woman" which is a form of affection in the form of diminutive.
Nevertheless, since there arent a lot of black people in mexico, people will be curious about you. Curiousity can be annoying believe me, i live in the US and i get confused for being mexican all the time. People of all colors come up to me and assume things and ask me about things of latin culture like i am some kind of encyclopedia or something or an authority on the stuff. And then of course, they already have preconceived notions of who you are, etc.
So that is what you are going to have to deal with. In the end, people are people, and you will gain respect and trust from some, while others will be racist. There are racist people in latin america, unfortunately. Expect racism to be out in the open and less hidden unlike the United States. What i mean mostly by that is that people will think things about you based on your skin color and tell you about it, that some people in the US wont tell you to your face. I did not mean that they were going to lynch you, or hurt you, or stuff like that with a higher likelyhood than in the US. That happens everywhere in the world, sadly.
I think the main thing to remember is that people in Mexico arent very educated as to what being black is, and how some of their preconceived notions and way in which they refer to you might hurt your feelings. But latin american people are lovely, because i am one, and we are very respectful, nice, helpful, and considerate too once we get to know what hurts your feelings. |
