Mapquest does NOT work for Mexico. The site below does. You will also need to buy a Guia Roji...the Mexican road atlas...can order it at amazon.com. See 2nd site below. See 3rd site for info on driving to Mexico and car permit. See 4th site for my favorite Mexican car insurance. If you have furthur questions about driving in mexico, you may email me. |

I'm from Chicago. I live in Mexico (not toooo far from Morelia in Toluca) I've driven from Chicago to Mexico a few times. Ready? Here goes.............Drive to Texarkana (55 to Memphis, 30 to Texarkana) the first day if you can handle that many hours. It took me 16 in my Jeep CJ7. You should be able to do it faster than that. Day 2.....TEXAS. Drive to Laredo (30 & 35). Spend the night and buy insurance from Sanborns or someone else at the border. From Nuevo Laredo Mexico, drive to Monterrey, then to Saltillio, then to San Luis Potosi, on to Queretaro, then to Celaya and Salamanca. Finally south to Valle de Santiago, through Uriangato. and on to Morelia. Use the tollways!!!! I cant stress this enough. Its expensive (maybe 60 dollars) but they are safer, there is free mechanical assistance by the Green Angels. There are more gas stations, and fewer locos. I would spend the night in San Luis Potosi. Dont drive too late in Mexico. The highways arent lit like in the states, and it makes a lot of difference. Signs arent lit either and sometimes can be confusing, or turns/interchanges are announced at the last moment in some cases. At the border, buy a Guia Roji (the Mexican map book). That's all I have for you. Contact me by email if you have any further questions...I'm Rob |

Yes what Rob said is good directions and advice. Also you can get a Mexican tour book from AAA office or online. For car insurance check with you car insurance if you can buy in chicago or AAA office usually will let you buy mexican insurance. Also car permit at the border and tourist visa. |

I'd do Mapquest. You'll get the most accurate, up to date directions. Also, you may want to keep up with what weather conditions will be. |

Oh my GOD. That's one hellish drive. My uncle routinely drives from Atlanta to Morelia (really beautiful town, by the way) and it takes him a couple of days. Sorry I can't help you with specific directions. |
