I'm going to Cancun. Will I get sick from food or water? |
Additional Details Just so you know I'm staying in Hostels, not resort hotels....and to the big D-bag who says I "sound like someone who would only stay in the tourist zone"....I am dumbfounded as to how you can judge that from such a vague question. Ahh...anyway.
We're also going to Merida and Chichin Itza and I am going to apply all of your advice (except the big D-bag's) to my trip.
Thank you very much!

Why the first two people got thumbs down is beyond me! Anyway... You should be fine for the most part. If you stick with the food in the hotels you shouldn't have a problem, but it is still possible to get sick if something doesn't agree with you. ONLY drink bottled water and the water from the resorts. The resorts provide bottled water all over the place so you will have it whenever you want it. I've been going to CancĂșn for over ten years and have never really gotten sick from the water or food, but one time I did get sick from some eggs I ate (come to find out they were made with goat cheese... yuck). But, anyway nobody can tell you that you won't get sick. You can get sick from food from anywhere you travel to. CancĂșn is a tourist destination and modern and up to date so most everything is fine to eat and drink and you should have no problems.
Enjoy your vacation...!!! |

You will be fine as long as you follow some basic guidelines. First, hotels offer bottled water everywhere you look only drink this water. The water from the tap is not good to drink. They say it is ok to shower with and wash your toothbrush with, and this is true. Just don't get excessive amounts of water into your mouth when showering. The food is cooked with water that has been purified by the hotel, so you will also be fine there. WHen you go out, bring a bottle of water, you never know when you will get thirsty. Have Fun! |

You could, so don't drink water from the tap. No one does, not even the natives... it's not potable (unless you are in a fancy hotel that has it's own potable water, but you still shouldn't drink it).
I'm still adjusting to life in Mexico, and I find that some of the things I eat do make me sick. I just have to be sure that the fruits and veggies are disinfected, which is something you generally don't need to worry about in restaurants. I also make sure that any meat or chicken or fish I am eating is fully cooked (ceviche is an exception and my weakness).
Cancun is a tourist town, and almost any touristy place you go is probably safe. If you have a sensitive stomach, be sure to take some staples along for the trip... mylanta, gas-x and immodium are all good to have on hand (just in case). |

Cancun's water is provided by Aquifers and is quite pure.
The only food to stay clear of is from street vendors. The hotel kitchens know what they are doing |

Not likely, if you stay in an established place andwatch what you eat. I have been goin for 20 years, all different parts of Mexico. I have known a few people who got sick.. Both people came down with Hepititis. the first guy got it from eating tomatoes, the second guy got it from eating oyster's. Don't drink the water. Most of your 5 star resorts have purified water running from their faucest, but I don't take chances. Mexico has some pretty good quality places to eat. When you get there, ask around. Word of mouth is the best. Have Fun!!! |

No, you sound like one of those people who will never leave the tourist zone and stay in a hotel and eat out on the strip all of the time. I don't think you will have a problem. |
