If you haven't already booked a hotel, stay at Palace Resorts for a GREAT all-inclusive (hotel, food, drinks - including soft drinks and alcohol, and excursions) vacation, including excursions to places like Isla Mujeres, Ek Balam, Tulum, and Chichen Itza. There are 6 or 7 of these hotels in and around Cancun, and you can use the pools, restaurants, bars, etc. at all of them if you stay at any of them. If you stay with them and take the Isla Mujeres excursion, say hello to Fernando and Victor for me. :-) |

Diz is right, drink only hotel water, nowhere else. And don't eat salads, only cooked things. the cheviche (fish cured in lime juice) is usualy safe and very good. I think Greg is wrong; unless you are very large and buff (or armed) driving in Mexico is a dicey proposition. Take the tour bus, it's worth it, to Chichen Itza, to Tulum, and Xel Ha (bring bathing suit). Also, the tourist jitney, available at the front entrance of all the hotels, (cheap) goes into Cancun City, where the markets for clothing, leather goods, and other stuff are much larger and less expensive than those on the 'strip'. If you are up for it, Cancun is one of the few remaining places where you can see bullfights (go late in the day, the first few matadors are the amatures, and usually not very skilled). If you are a snorkel fan, the Palancar reef is a must; boats leave from Playa Linda as I recall. |

Don't drink the water or have their ice....same thing. Still get pills from your doctor to take for diarrhea because you just never know. I'm glad I had them. I needed them more than once. Plan on gaining a few pounds from all the good food and drink. And don't forget your sun block. If you want to buy silver, there's a stamped code on it that proves it's the real stuff. Don't get ripped off. |

The Isla De Mujuers is nice, Coba if you are adventurous, Xhel-Ha is a great way to relax. |

Rent a car and go see the Mayan Ruins. Don't take the "Tour Bus" as it takes too long and makes you stop at a cheap shopping area. It is neat to see the ruins, but friends of mine took the tour and advised me against it. I got a car for $20 for a day and it was better! Enjoy the gulf too, the water is awesome. |

There are plenty of places to buy bottled water when away from the hotel so do not worry about that. There are people that want your money everywhere. They will sing, dance, or whatever. So keep some smaller bills on you. At least once try to get off the hotel zone strip. There is a resturant in downtown Cancun called Perico's...its pretty good stuff. They have a Wal-mart. I had to go just so I could see a Mexican Walmart. The flea market at the north end of hotel zone, corel *****, is a nice place to get those take home souviners. I suggest walking around the outside though. If you walk down the center hall you have shop owners enticing you into their shops from both sides. If you use the outside it only comes from one side at a time. Check out you travel agents packages. One I have enjoyed that last two times I have been was Maroma ranch. They have horseback riding, snorkeling, deep sea fishing, atv tours, and speed boat tours. They take you their by air condition coachliner about 45 mins south of Cancun. It is very peacfully at the ranch. I took a nap under a palm tree while waiting to head out in the speed boats. It was the best nap I have ever had. Well, the rest I let you discover. The point to going to another country is to explore a little. So have fun in your discoveries. |

My best suggestion is to rent a car if you want to go see the ruins. It gives you a chance to stop by all the little town and you pay very small fees to get in compared to the ones they offer online. It is very easy to get around. Visit Coba, Chichen Itza and isla mujeres. If you take a taxi make sure you ask how much they are going to charge you first. |
