You need one before you cross the boarder going out because it will be near impossible to get one over there

depending on when you plan on returning As of Jan 28 2008 you will need a passport

This web site contains all the information you will need for returning to the US.

If your driving to and from Mexico you don't need a passport until Summer 2008. BUT if you decide you want to fly back then you will need a passport. Hope this helped.

No you do not. If you go to the Homeland Security website you will find you can come back, if you are driving, with a birth certificate and a valid drivers license or other government ID card. This rule takes effect Jan. 31, 2008. At this moment only a drivers license and a verbal, "yes I am an American Citizen" gets you through. If you have the time before driving I would get a passport anyway. It's always easier with one.

You need a passport. If you don't have one it can take up to six weeks to get one. It won't be a problem getting into Mexico but you will not be able to come back without a valid passport.

Contact Senator Leahy. In the last link I have provided, it says that by June of 2009 you will need a passport if you drive, walk or go by cruise liner to go to Mexico and get back into the country. IF you fly, you need one now.

There are two separate links (in the last link I have provided) that show where the President has extended the deadline as well as the Leahy-Stevens Amendment. Click on both links and you will see what it has to say.

The following information is from the government website.

You will also be able to use Trusted Traveler Cards as well as passports to re-enter the U.S. (if you plan on staying into the summer months of 2008).

If you come back before the summer of 2008, here is what you will need:

JANUARY 31, 2008
U.S. and Canadian citizens will need to present either a WHTI-compliant document (Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative), or a government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license, plus proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate. DHS also proposes to begin alternative procedures for U.S. and Canadian children at that time.

If you come back during the summer of 2008 (at a time to be determined by the DHS), you will need the following (and passports won't be the only method by which you can re-enter the U.S.)

SUMMER 2008
At a later date, to be determined, the departments will implement the full requirements of the land and sea phase of WHTI. The proposed rules require most U.S. citizens entering the United States at sea or land ports of entry to have either a U.S. passport; a U.S. passport card; a trusted traveler card such as NEXUS, FAST, or SENTRI; a valid Merchant Mariner Document (MMD) when traveling in conjunction with official maritime business; or a valid U.S. Military identification card when traveling on official orders.

The implementation date will be determined based on a number of factors, including the progress of actions undertaken by the Department of Homeland Security to implement the WHTI requirements and the availability of WHTI compliant documents on both sides of the border. DHS and DOS expect the date of full WHTI implementation to be in the summer of 2008. The precise implementation date will be formally announced with at least 60 days notice.

As you can see from the above mentioned information, passports won't be the only way of entering or leaving Canada or Mexico.
