You will have such a great time in Cozumel. It's one of my favorite islands. Cozumel is very safe and the boys will love the snorkeling. This island is all about the water and beaches. Be sure to plan a snorkel excursion for them.
Check out this site.

I have traveled to Cozumel with my daughter 4 times since she was 11 (she is 15 now)...and we are returning in July. We absolutely love visiting there, and have always felt safe. Cozumel is definitely geared toward taking care of its tourists, and has a very low crime rate. We can always find people who speak English, so that is never a problem. Taxi rates are set, and you can ask at your hotel what the standard charges are to various locations - so no surprises. (We have never had a taxi driver try to overcharge.) The tours and excursions are great. We love Xcaret, and have been to all the ruins on the mainland and the ruins on the island. Yes it is hot - but it is Mexico. We live in Texas, and really do not mind the weather, but we have also been in the fall when the heat index is lower. The cruise ships come and go, and since we always spend a full week, we just time our events around the cruise times. You can ask anyone on town when the ships are coming and going. You can usually make better deals shopping when the ships are not in port. I have found that you can get most items for 25-30% of the ask price if you are persistent and have cash. Other great to-dos are swimming with the dolphins, and the glass bottom boats and snorkel trips. We love to eat at Pepe's grill for a nice evening of lobster and luxury. Our top activity is just snorkeling and "chilling" at the national park. I have learned to avoid the all-inclusive hotels since they tend to draw the drinking and party crowd. We usually stay at Casa Mexicana in downtown - a beautiful and convenient hotel. Since we spend very little time in the hotel, it is great..but the pool is really small...but after a day swimming at the beach or other location, I don't really want to swim. If you stay there pay the extra for a ocean view.I think it is a great trip for a family, and everyone has always been friendly and respectful. We often spend the evening walking around downtown and by the ocean and just talking.
I hope you go and enjoy it as much as we do. Cozumel is the vacation we take to really just lay back and have fun. (We also enjoy Europe - but that is an adventure and requires jet lag adaptations.)

You'll be fine in Cozumel. There are many things you can do, depending on what your children like. Watersports and snorkeling are always available (although the reefs where you snorkel were damaged by Katrina and are just starting to recover), there are tours in 4 wheel drives, the Dolphin Discovery in Chankaanab National Park, etc.

If you want to expose them to some history and culture as well, there are a few Mayan ruins on the island, but you can take a day tour via ferry and bus to Playa del Carmen and one of the larger ruins, Tulum or Chichen Itza, and perhaps combine that with a visit to Xel-Ha or Xcaret.

How long are planning to spend there? When are you going? Keep in mind that there may be better options depending on time of year, where you're flying from, etc.

I just returned from Cancun/Cozumel (04/07/07) & would not recommend the trip.
I went on my honeymoon, & spent time at the Mayan ruins, on Cozumel, etc. The heat & humidity are ever-present, & Cozumel has alot of cruise-ships coming & going, so there are alot of tourists, too. There is a limited number of things to do- except party, & there is always a slight danger in being out after dark (Mexico is a very poor country, so be careful!)
Also, as far as the Day-trips go, I didn't like Chichen-Itza, as it required extensive walking (in the heat), & they didn't allow you to climb on the pyramids (temples). I did enjoy a smaller place called Coba. They rented bicycles (if you wanted) & DID allow you to climb the 122 step temple. Also, this tour included other diverse activities, such as: repelling into a gorge, zip-lining across the same gorge, & swimming in an underground (sink-hole) pool! Boys would LOVE this one, & you don't have to do any part that you don't want to. They also served lunch, prepared by actual Mayan descendants, in an outdoor setting.
IMO that was the best part of the entire trip! Even the new wife did all the stuff, & LOVED it!

Hi,
My bride and I really enjoyed Cozumel last December and are returning in July. I would recommend an all inclusive resort in Cozumel, Royal Park is my choice the food is excellent and they have a lot of kids programs.
On the Yucatan you'll find great deals as well. Palya Del Carmen area is a very good choice for an all inclusive.
If you are a little adventurous, my bride and I did this, rent a car and drive to Chichen Itza using the toll road, very safe and spend one night at Mayan Land Resort. This resort is right at the Chichen Itza ruins. You can experience the ruins at your own speed see all the sites and then see the night show that displays the serpents during the Solstice. You will not be disappointed.
Avoid Cancun and Hotel Row. Everything is over priced.
At any of the hotels you'll find tours.
