I've heard that americans will soon need a passport to go to Mexico, even for day trips, is this true?
Yes, for Mexico and Canada, it is already in effect for air travel and is supposed to be for all travelers by the end of this year.

All the answers you got so far are mistaken. you currently need a passport to FLY yo Mexico. You do NOt need a passport to DRIVE or travel by any means by LAND to Mexico. That requirement will take effect after summer of 2008. See webpage below for the newest annoincement...read the top half of the page.

By January 1, 2008. Note...this question has been answered so many times. Apply now, the US government office is very far behind in processing applications.

You do not need a passport to come to Mexico. You need an American passport to re enter the USA.

It's not that you need a passport to go to Mexico. You need one to RETURN to the USA. However most airlines will not take you if you do not have the proper documentation to return.

Yes.
As of January 2007 anyone flying (other commercial modes as well (cruises)) need a passport to return into the US.
They gave some grace periods and a few delays due to the back log of passport requests. They are all caught up now.
As of January 2008 you'll need a passport to return to the US even if you are walking or driving into Mexico. I live about 30 min. drive from Mexico and shopping there on the weekend for me is like going to the mall. It really stinks but I have begun the passport process myself. It takes about 6 weeks.
Schmoke and a pancake?
Yes, if it's not true already. We will need a passport starting January 1, 2008 (or was it 2007?) to go to Canada, Mexico and the Carribean islands that are not US territories. Essentially everywhere that you could go before with just your birth certificate.

I think that it is now in effect. It is for Canada, Mexico and Virgin Islands, I think even Puerto Rico.

I am pretty sure it is. Americans aleady have to have one just to get into Canada so I would say if you are going to be traveling alot go ahead and get your pass port so you will have it on hand when the need arises.
