I am an American, retired, living in Mexico on approx. that amount. Mexico IS SAFE. I disagree that San Miquel de Allende and the Lake Chapala areas are best on a moderate budget. They are more expensive places to live. A non-touristy, non-gringo area will be much less expensive. A small town, located near a larger one for convienences works well. Cost of living varies widely in different parts of Mexico, but there are many good places to live on a moderate budget. I live in the state of Veracruz. There are a few gringos here, but not many. It is not a major tourist area, but has many interesting places to visit. It is beautiful, has a great climate, and there is not the political unrest here like there is in some areas. If you would like more details about expenses here, or if I could help you in any way, please e-mail me. |

I live on a bit more but have a 3 bedroom 2 bath house one block from the beach ... for $4000mx which is about $370us.
Be careful on the coasts because electricity is expensive and you may need air conditioning.
It really takes being here awhile and traveling around ... but it's very doable just about anywhere in central Mexico |

first of all mexico is safe and much more beautiful that the states..
if you live in mexico city thats another story but if you live in a small town not messing with anyone you will be alright , mexican people are so friendly youll make friends if you learn the language quick. you can buy a home for about 20000 dollars and your rent could be about 50$ a month which is nothing compared to the US. the food is excellent go for it try "los altos de jalisco, arandas, la chona, san juan de los lagos" beautiful women (thats where im from:)
ps. T.J mex. is not even safe, people need to get the facts not just guessing. |

So rude.......mexico city is the one that is insecure.....just avoid it...you have an entire country beautiful by the way...monterrey is quite expensive 800-1500 just in rent¡¡ for a nice house....mm maybe a beach cabo or cancun....or Saltillo, Coahuila is small, quiet not so expensive and is 45min away from monterrey...great industrial city like chicago without the cold and the wind. |
