First of all you need to lose the attitude..................
"I am a wealthy American "will bring you nothing but problems here my friend.........That Mikey can assure you.
Spread your wealth and Mexicans will "con" or rob you of it.............Wear jewlery and brag about your wealth.......You will be looking for the police who will not come or have sympathy - only an outstrecthched hand for a broken promise to care about your problem.
Having the American attitude will set you up for failure just trying to establish electrical service at your home.
It is a different way of thinking and life here. It moves at its own pace and is often slow .
You also are mistaken that a vacation is the same as Living here. Very different there Sparky............Let word get out that there is a "wealthy" gringo living down the street and I would hate to be in your position..................Stay in Beverly Hills. You are not street wise enough to live here. I can tell just by the way you have written your question. you will not be able to deal with all the requirements needed to live and retire here. It is a long and hard process to deal with the Gov't here and the needed paperwork.................it moves very slow and will be full of outstreched hands looking for a bribe to move it faster.................Just that ,a broken , bribe filled promise..........and you will have an American attitude and Never understand that you have again been taken..............
You will want and expect things to be done for you and now ! Not gonna happen !
I would spot your American attitude from a mile away and scam you so bad you wont know what hit you, and I'm honest as the day is long !
Mexico is FAR different to reside in than being on vacation !
Come down and stay a few weeks and then look for a realator and attorney from a residents point of view............Dont give them any money ! This will open your eyes and you HOPEFULLY will see that a "wealthy" American here means a moving ,stupid ATM, for all to withdrawl from.
Ive been to Beverly Hills and am retired in Acapulco.
If your serious, here is a good website for you to read..........

I can understand Mikey's point of view. Mexicans that live in Mexico City can sniff a dumb gringo (not being racist, I'm American myself but I got street smarted by living in Mexico City most of my life so I know what it's like) from a mile away. I can agree from Mikey that there will be people that will try to get money out of you just because you don't have the street smarts to know better. If you're dumb enough to believe in a subway ticket teller jokingly telling you that you can reach Los Angeles by the Mexico City subway, then you're not street smart enough to live here safely.
I've been to Beverly Hills once and it does look a bit like the Las Lomas neighborhood of Mexico City, just much flatter than Lomas and with American style houses. It's very different to visit a Cancun resort where everyone treats you like a king because you are paying them good cash to pamper you than really living here where people won't give you a candy bar treatment because you're gringo (many mexicans just don't plain like Americans because they find them hypocritical and annoying, the sooner you understand this, the better). If you act like just an ordinary person that just happens to have been born in another country and decides to live here like it were no big deal, they will just treat you like any other foreigner. People don't seem to feel too annoyed when I admit I wasn't born in Mexico, just be cool and don't wave dollar bills in the air like an idiot.
I agree about the part: Don't brag about how rich you are. You're only going to attract kidnappers and people that will loot your house when you're out to the movies or something. The more low-key life you seem to live, the more likely people won't see you like a pidegon to loot from and just see you as the foreigner dude that casually lives in the street.
You could try out living in a flat in an upscale place like Santa Fe in Mexico City for a few months on a 6 month tourist visa. If you have the cash to own a house in Beverly Hills (enough $$$ to buy a palace in the most expensive places in Mexico City indeed), you could easily buy or rent a flat in Santa Fe and live kind of low-key but in a wealthy man's neighborhood. You probably won't get to feel the true Mexico City that you can only experience in a more middle class place like La Condesa, but it could be a pretty safe baby step towards moving here, get a bit of the vibe of how locals treat you, learn at least a little spanish and without as much of a risk of getting looted and scammed. I do think that Santa Fe is a very isolated place though. It's like living in a flat in Malibu and never seeing the more middle class parts of LA like Pasadena or Culver City, it's just really isolated. Another upscale place you could potentially like for a flat would be in Interlomas which isn't far from Santa Fe.
If I had a choice to live in any place of Mexico City (pardon my obsession with the DF, but it's the part of the country that I know best), I'd go to a cool place to blend in like Coyoacán. The south part of the city is really pretty and it has good restaurants and cool architecture. The Napoles neighborhood that's also in the south has a lot of nice apartments.
Of course, if you're insanely daring to the verge of insanity, you could always get a flat in a dangerous neighborhood like La Neza or a slum like Chalco. Just don't say you're rich of course, that's like putting on a sign saying "loot me".
Never really lived outside of the city in rural communities; but it's like living in small-town America: Everyone knows eachother. You could either come by as just some friendly foreign dude that lives there or a walking ATM. You would have to learn to become tolerant of loud grupera and cumbia music pounding at full volume every Friday and Saturday night if you move to a rural area that isn't a posh millionaire neighborhood. Also, you'd have to be tolerant that especially in rural places, it's socially acceptable for minors to drink alcohol here. |

San Miguel de Allende has beautiful weather and it's a quaint little town in the hills. Beautiful scenery also. Lots of Americans (mostly retired, but some families) live there and open little shops. As safe as Mexico gets. |

If you are truly wealth, you could live in San Jose del Cabo or Cabo San Lucas, but those places are only for realy wealth persons, truly.
I think a 30% of the population in Baja California Sur are gringos, and is one of the safest states in Mexico. |
