It depends if your going by air, land or sea. As of Jan. 23rd, 07, if you're flying , you will need a valid passport. Beginning Jan. 1st, 07, you may be required to present a valid passport or other documents required by Homeland Security if you're traveling by land or sea. |

Check out the State Dept. Website:

If you are flying to Mexico, you will need a passport (as of Jan. 27. 2007). Next Janaury (2008), you will need a passport if you go on a cruise ship (by sea) or if you drive over the border.
Re answer #1: Incredible as it sounds, America does not issue travel cards to citizens. We have no formal means of ID besides a drivers license (or another card if you don't drive). Neither one is mandatory. |

as of jan, 23, you will not cross that border without a passport. Don't believe people who tell you a driver's license/ ss card/ birth certificate will work. They are no longer acceptable. Go online to get a number to call. There are post offices that issue passports... but you'll have to find the one in your area. |

i just got back from mexico and i am american. i had to get a passport. if you are flying you need one. if you are driving you dont need one until next january. (or so i've been told) we went driving and i had my passport. it takes 6 to 8 weeks for delivery but you can have them rush it to you for an extra fee if you need it sooner.go to the post office. the application process is real short and simple. its $97.00 and you need to show proof of ID and a birth certificate. the original copy. they will keep your birth certificate and you will get it back in the mail with your passport. hope this helps, and have a good trip! |

If you are traveling from Mexico by air or sea - you need a passport after Jan 23, 2007. If you are driving - they've delayed the requirement until June 1, 2009. Check www.travel.state.gov -link on the upper left |

The answer is YES! You will need a passport to re-enter the USA. If you are traveling via air you will need it by January 23, 2007. If you cross over the border in a car then the answer is January 1, 2008.
Beginning January 23, 2007, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling by air between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda will be required to present a valid passport, Air NEXUS card, or U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Document, or an Alien Registration Card, Form I-551, if applicable.
As early as January 1, 2008, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda by land or sea (including ferries), may be required to present a valid passport or other documents as determined by the Department of Homeland Security. While recent legislative changes permit a later deadline, the Departments of State and Homeland Security are working to meet all requirements as soon as possible. Ample advance notice will be provided to enable the public to obtain passports or passport cards for land/sea entries.
