You sure do...

Beginning January 23, 2007, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling by air between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda will be required to present a valid passport, Air NEXUS card, or U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Document, or an Alien Registration Card, Form I-551, if applicable.

right now, all you need is a birth certificate and photo ID, if you are entering via bus. make sure to get out at the little hut and get your tourist visa on the mexican side. it's 17 dollars....but i heard it might have gone up to 20 or 23.

i hate to say this, but if you are hispanic, or you look hispanic...the border patrol on the US side can be REAL....jerks. and they'll grill you and all this other junk, so a passport is really the best for reentry. just to save yourself the hassle, whether you're hispanic, caucasion, asian, whatever...it's just easier.

yes yes if you need to come home

joyceeleann
Yes..All americans need a passport now no matter where you go to get back into the USA as id no matter what. The usa made this mandatory a few months back.

earfulofb.s.
Yea, if you want to get back into America!

It depends on how deep into Mexico you are traveling. If you are just going across the border like to Tijuana for example then you don't need one, but if you are going to places deeper like Mexico city it is better to have your passport. You won't need it to get back into the US but you might be asked for it by Mexican officials.

not yet, by land anyways, but make sure to take identification to prove that you are a citizen

Skyhawk
Yes.
New law as of this year.

Oops! maybe not.

Barkley Hound
You only need it this year for flying. You will need it next year for all crossings.

* As early as January 1, 2008, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda by land or sea (including ferries), may be required to present a valid passport or other documents as determined by the Department of Homeland Security. While recent legislative changes permit a later deadline, the Departments of State and Homeland Security are working to meet all requirements as soon as possible. Ample advance notice will be provided to enable the public to obtain passports or passport cards for land/sea entries.

yes because u are entering a different country, u definetly need to show them ur passport.

Eppson
Nope, you don't need it to enter Mexico, you will need it to get back to US

dionne m
I would think so because you will still have to pass the border and their police/border patrol (unless you plan on sneaking into Mexico). Besides, its a good idea to have it anyway in case something happens.

heada_bone
You now need a US passport ANY time you want to re-enter the country. If you walk from San Diego to Tia Juana, you will need your passport to come back.
