Make sure you take a list of phone numbers that you can call internationally in case your passport gets lost, your credit cards, in case something happens and you need to contact the airline or hotel, etc. If you can find where the US embassy is in that city, keep the info handy as you never know when you will need it. Depending on what part you're going, if it's a rural area, then take mosquito spray, as the season is coming up. Of course, take over the counter medicine for headaches, stomach, allergies, etc. ALWAYS take some garments on your carry on in case your luggage gets lost, one time my luggage got lost for 2 days during the Chirstmas season and nothing like having a clean pair of undies everyday. Once you're there, do NOT drink any water that isn't filtered (in other words, bottled water only). Sodas and beer are safe. Everybody caters to you, but for a price, so make sure you ask how much stuff is before you assume it's value; if it's non-food items or service, more than likely you can negotiate. Many people are friendly, some by nature, other s by convenience. Don't assume everybody is your friend but don't assume everybody is out there to get you either; be respectful to people and they will respect you. Most people make their money off tip; when you're getting paid $10-$20 a day, a $2 tip goes a long way; tip when appropiate. Use your better judgement when you're out and about, at times you may feel more than safe, but don't let your guard down.
After your first time, you'll feel more than comfortable on what to do and not to do. The above advice is what I do when I go to a new country, being Brazil or Thailand or wherever.
One more important thing... before you arrive to Mexico (especially via air), you will fill out a declaration card and a tourist's visa form on the plane. Upon arrival, the custom's agent will give you a small portion of the tourist's visa you just filled out, DO NOT throw it away. Keep it in the same place as the passport becasue you will need it on your way back when you go to the airport and attempt to get your ticket. If you don't have it, they give you a hard time and you'll end up paying like $40-$50 for it, per person.
Hope this helps and have fun. |

A positive attitude, common sense, good behaviour, thirst for adventure. You aren't going to another planet...bottled water readily available, purified ice used in up scale hotels and restaurants. Have fun. |
