I see you got 14 answers so far and NONE is exactly correct. The new passport regulations go into effect on Jan. 23, 2007. After that date you must have a passport for AIR travel. After Jan. 2008, you will need a passport for all modes of travel. Best thing is for you to go to the website i have listed below and read it for yourself for your own peace of mind. If you decide you want to go ahead and get a passport, you will have to do the "expedited' service to have a chance of getting it that fast. Please read for yourself...don't take anyone else's word for it! |

Lots of answers, none of them quite on target. First, if you go to a foreign country it is always a good idea to have a passport simply because you may decide to go to a different country before you return to the U.S., or you may find yourself in a pickle and a passport is the best way to prove your citizenship. Regarding visiting Mexico, the law has recently changed and you will require one to visit Mexico by air or sea on or after 8 Jan 2007. If you drive into Mexico, you do not need one until 1 June 2009. You will however need to have some form of identification such as a state issued photo ID, federal military ID, as well as having a stamped copy of a birth certificate if that establishes your citizenship. You didn't say how you were going to Cancun, so use the rule that applies to you. Good luck and enjoy your trip. |
