You do not need a passport to travel to Mexico by LAND or SEA. You do need a photo I.D. and proof of citizenship...a birth certificate. To FLY to Mexico, you must have a passport. See site below and read carefully.

DONT DO IT!!! Is the only advice that I can give you. You are still allowed to travel by land to Mexico without a passport but it is much more difficult to cross both ways on the border. In Jan of next year it will be a requirement to have a passport to travel by land, and it is much better to have your passport before the last min. ones file all at the same time and cause a back up in the deliverance in the passports.
