Of course you can...if you are only going within 20 miles of the border or into Baja or Sonora, you do not need a car permit. Otherwise you need a permit. You also need to purchase mex. car ins before crossing the border. See article below. i am an American living in Mexico and brought my car...know many ohters with cars here too. No problems.

Mags
Yes Martina, you can take you car.

Please read the following from the Consular Section of the Mexican Embassy about taking your vehicle and yourself across the border.

"American tourists planning to go to Mexico by car beyond the border zone ( 20 to 30 kilometers of the border with the United States) must previously get a tourist card from the Mexican consulate or Mexican Immigration at the border checkpoint. They must also obtain a temporary import permit for the vehicle. Proof of citizenship, car title (or pink slip) and registration must be produced, along with the driver’s license, to a Banjército Bank at a Mexican Customs office. The fee to process the permit will be approximately $25.00 (remember that fees change every six months according to the respective law). A bond must be posted at Banjército either in cash (US$200 to 400.00 depending on the model of the car) or by credit card, to ensure foreign made vehicles will be taken out of the country at permit expiration date. Visa, American Express, or Master Card are welcome by Banjército. To check the car out of Mexico, tourists must return to exactly the same Customs office upon leaving the country; otherwise they run the risk of further credit card charges and/or they forfeit the bond posted.

If the vehicle is not paid off, please submit a notarized letter of authorization issued by the proprietor. If the car or van belongs to your employer, you will be required to produce an identification as his (her) employee. If the vehicle is rented, you should submit the rental contract with the respective authorization.

The traveler can take his or her luggage and additional items up to $50.00 per person or $250.00 for a family of five, never exceeding US$1,000.00 in total, when travelling by road. If you exceed that limit, make the necessary arrangements at the Mexican Customs Office.

For more information on how to bring a car into Mexico, please consult Tips for Travelers to Mexico, which appears on the Internet at http://travel.state.gov.

Applicants, under 18 years old, traveling by themselves, must present a notarized authorization, signed by both parents or legal guardians, granting their permission to get their tourist visa"

In addition, you will need to talk to your insurance company and make sure that you have the proper insurance cards.

Please carry all documentation in a safe place, pregerably on your person to ensure that it isn't stolen.

What do you need before leaving your home?

Vehicle Registration or Title for your vehicle (bring original and two copies).
A valid U.S. or Canadian Driver's License.
Proof of Legal Residence in the U.S.: Birth Certificate, Passport, or Resident Alien Card.

What are the procedures when you get to the border?

1. Go to the Mexican Customs (ADUANA)/Vehicle Control Checkpoint
2. Fill out form: TEMPORARY IMPORT PERMIT
3. Fill out form: VEHICLE RETURN PROMISE AGREEMENT.
4. Fill out form: Tourist Card (FMT or FME).
5. Go to Banjercito (Mexican Army Bank) with those three Forms.
6. Complete vehicle security deposit procedure by using any of the three available methods: Credit Card, Bond or Bank Deposit.

What other information should you know about driving your car in Mexico?

1. You must have these documents with you while driving: TEMPORARY IMPORT PERMIT, VEHICLE RETURN PROMISE AGREEMENT, Tourist Card (FMT or FME), Your Driver's License, Proof of Citizenship. IMPORTANT NOTE: Do not leave any documents in your unattended vehicle.

2. The temporarily imported vehicle may be driven by the spouse or adult children of the importer (U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident of the U.S.). Also, foreigners with the same Mexican immigration status of the importer may drive the vehicle.

3. Mexican nationals residing in Mexico or foreigners or foreigners residing permanently in Mexico may drive the vehicle only if the importer, the importer's spouse or the importer's adult son or daughter is in the vehicle.

i wouldnt. it would suck if something happened to your car while your down there.

Obamas Shoes
Yes but check with your insurance company first about whether you are covered down there. They may have limits since you could be hit by an uninsured driver or get your car stolen. I hear if you get a car stolen in the US and it is taken to Mexico, you can forget about the insurance money.

Antonio
yes you can people do that all the time, even without a pasport

Rico
you could, but i wouldn't. its a hazard to drive to mexico especially with the violence going on between the drug gangs and the government. Plus you don't want to stumble into any bad areas

Chicken W
well if i did then you can...and im a chicken!!!!!

take a look.

You can from what I understand, but if you leave anything of value in your car, expect it to get broken into, even if it's just a pack of gum.
