If you're going to a resort, don't bother with bottled water. Quintana Roo (the state where Cancun is located) is the leader in water purification...there's plenty of bottled water to be had there. Instead, bring LOTS of sunscreen (and apply it, even when it gets to be a pain in the butt), bug spray or wipes, pepto, immodium AD, tylenol...if you're staying in cancun the US dollar is golden there, you probably won't even need to change currency. I found it helpful to carry a small pad of paper and a pen/pencil with me for the rare times communication broke down...sometimes writing it down helps. Oh, and make sure you bring all of your toiletries that you would normally bring travelling, they're pretty pricey down there.
Enjoy your trip! |

Go to your doctor and get a prescription for Cipro. If you get a case of "the revenge", you'll be begging for it. It will basically cure you overnight.
I caught it and it stayed with me for 3 weeks. Pepto bismol and Imodium ad might as well have been tic-tacs to me; completely useless. I was super cautious too, even carried around little tubes of anti-bacterial hand lotion. Of course, I went to a place off the map - nothing even remotely close to Cancun or Cozumel or some resort area like that.
If you can't afford Cipro, and if you get the revenge, go to a Mexican pharmacy and ask for Fasign tablets. Basically the same thing, but you cant find them in the US.
Good luck. |

FYI, pretty soon the U.S. is going to start requiring passports to travel to Canada and Mexico. You won't need it now, but the program is slowly being implemented, with Mexico and Canada travel restrictions being enforced around 2007 (I think).
So, for this trip:
1)translation guide
2)bottled water (or water purifier even better)
3)travelers checks to use in case you need emergency cash
4)sunscreen
5)a sense of awareness of your surroundings. Don't forget there are people there trying to take advantage of you. Never get so drunk that you loose sense of yourself. |
