I have a condo in PV adn have been down there dozens of times. It's extremely safe and clean. You shouldn't have any real worries. The only thing you should be a bit wary of is using a credit card in dodgy little stores adn restaurants - most are fine but be sure to get the carbon paper between the signing slips. This is an issue anywhere in Mexico not just PV - hasn't been a problem for me but my dad did get a call from Visa after a trip asking him about odd purchases - someone got his number adn tried using it.

The first answerer is full of sh!t. the place is fine and water is safe for brushing your teeth, ice cubes, washing salad etc. you can drink it too but it's not recommended to drink a lot of it - even teh locals drink boittled water most fo the time. A number of years ago they had a potable water system put in which makes it ok to drink even though it's not quite up to our standards in Canada & the US.

There's tons of stuff to do adn see, tours, booze cruises etc., lots of awesome restaurants, nightlife is amazing too adn teh beaches aren't too bad either even though I'm not really a beach person myself.

for all your PV needs/questions check this out - it covers EVERYTHING!! http://www.puertovallarta.net/

have a good trip - I'm going down again myself in a while too.

You will love PV. And no, you do not need a bodyguard. That is ridiculous. Mexico is far safer than the US. PV has the cleanest water in Mexico with virtually all water purified. I still drink bottled water, but that is from a force of habit. You will see police almost everywhere. This is because tourists are the main source of income for the Mexicans and your safety is very important to them.

They are wonderful people and will be very helpful to you if you ask them. Be polite and respect their country and culture and you will fall in love with their great country. It helps to know a little Spanish. Certainly learn "please" and "thank you" at least.

Make sure you get away from your hotel and catch the bus to "El Centro". This is the old downtown area of PV where the shopping and food are unmatched by the resort areas. The bus costs you about forty cents American. If you catch a cab ALWAYS settle on a price first. A cab ride to anywhere in town is 3 or 4 dollars. The taxi from the airport to town will run you alot more due to airport taxes. Take the pedestrian bridge over to where city cabs wait to take you to your hotel for much less.

Time-share hawks are everywhere. They will promise you anything to get you to sit through a 3 or 4 hour presentation. Just say no thanks and keep walking. Smile and don't be rude. They are just trying to make a living.

Try the food from the cart vendors selling tacos and fish. Very cheap and very good. Beers run about the same as in the US unless you are downtown where happy hour prices are sometimes a buck.

Personally, I always stay in the smaller Mexican hotels downtown. They are great.

You are perfectly safe waking around after dark. Most night-clubs don't even get busy until 11 pm and then they go on all night.

Do NOT drive after dark. You certainly don't need a car in PV. Taxis and buses are everywhere.

Don't flash a wad of money around. Doing that is dumb no matter where you are.

I can pretty much promise you that you will love your time in PV. I know I do....that is why I'm retiring there.

Good Luck and Have Fun!... adios amigo

most clubs are safe and have security people , if you venture from the club staying sober and showing respect for the locals will help you if you need them , remember your in their country and they hate disrespectfully foreigners , have a good time and in joy

I am answering this question from my hotel room in Puerto Vallarta and can tell you it is one of the safest cities in THE WORLD, much less Mexico (which is generally safer than most of the USA).

I have been here many, many times. Virtually all the restaurants and hotels have purified water, so the ice is safe, as is the water (if you ask). The purification sometimes makes it a little odd tasting, so I usually buy my own at the nearby grocery store (10 liters for $1.50).

This is a great place to vacation -- lots of activities, nearby jungles for adventure, or just relax on the beach. The weather right now is perfect (especially if you are coming from the cold East Coast).

Don't overbook yourself -- take time to just go to the Malecon (main beach front), get the 2 person Seafood Platter at an ocean view table at Tequila's Restaurant (and try the Tequila), then just wander.

If you like parasailing or jet skiing, they are available all up and down the bay.

The so-called "advice" of the Bruce is 100% crap -- he has clearly never been to Mexico, much less here.

Enjoy!

Bruce
Take or hire a personal security guard to protect you and your family. Lock your wallet and credit cards on the hotel safe, only take in cash what you need for the day. Don't have ice cubes in your drinks or water, don't eat salads, if its not cooked or you can,t peel it don't eat it. The water in Mexico is contamined and you could end up with hepitas a or b. Have a twinrex shot before you go and only drink bottled water. So many tourists have lost their lifes or been injured, watch your back and be careful. Two more tourists just shot hours ago. Good Luck
