ScubaDude

I desperately want to move to Mexico for the culture, people and food. Any suggestions?

I'm not rich or famous, so the luxury areas are out. I just want to move there for the people, weather, culture and food. Finding a small job would also be helpful. I understand there are several expat communities there, but am finding it hard to find specific information. Any suggestions?

I agree that they'll be few jobs, you do need a permit and it pays very little. Maybe teaching English

Check these message boards of gringos living in Mexico. There are others

I just went there last week and let's just say it's not the best. I would advise you to move to Arizona, New Mexico, or Texas. You can visit there all the time. But u do NOT want to live there!

I wouldn't recommend moving to Mexico to anyone if they are not prepared for it. The only way to enjoy living in Mexico is by having sufficient money to be there. Finding jobs is VERY difficult. Not even doctors who went to the best universities can get one.

I have done a lot of research on the web to find out about rentals. Here are some sites that will help you out:

http://www.infopv.com/E.php3/ID/203
http://www.escapeartist.com/efam4/Teaching_English_In_Mexico.html
http://www.welcometovallarta.com/bolsatrabajo.htm
http://www.banderasnews.com/classifieds/rentals.htm

Hope some of these help!
The best thing for you to do is to put aside 2-3 months worth of savings to get you by your first few months. Once your there it will be easier to find a place. Stay at a cheap hotel or hostel for the first few nights. You should find a place right away. When I go this fall I am bring about $2000 for my initial set up. The bandaras news website has a lot of listings for rentals. Try not to rent from a rental agency, they suck supposedly. Good luck!!

TINKERTOY ..... the 1 & only
I saw a TV special about AMericans moving to Mexico, to the Baja. It appeared that most were people of retirement age who didn't have to work and could afford to have a small hosue built there. In these communities the cost of living is lower than in the US and they have about the same services. The TV program compared them to living in San Diego.

You should try checking the newspapers in Mexico for some leads, and maybe the San Diego newspapers.
