Good guy
I have a passport. Do I need a visa to travel to Mexico? How long can I stay there with out a visa?
you will need a tourist visa (F.M.T) if you are going past the border area. they are given at the border when you apply for a vehicle permission sticker if you plan to drive into mexico (past the border area) with your personal car. if arriving by plane, the airlines will pass them out to you before arrival. by bus, you may have to ask for one as most ppl going into mexico by bus are mexican citizens and dont need one.

the first answer is probably wrong. they just changed the requirements recently. you should check out the government's website at:
http://travel.state.gov/
that will get you started...

Have you never heard of the "VISA WAIVER" program? There are about 140 countries that are signatures to that agreement... you just get off the plane or ship and the VISA will just be stamped on your passport... the VISA is that stamp the Immigration people stamp onto your passport.
If you are going in by car or walking, the Mexican authorities don't even ask to see a passport.

You do not need a visa in advance. The F.M.T. tourists visas are good for a maximum of 180 days and you must exit Mexico.
They are given at the border and also on the airplane and unless they are looking for you , everyone is accepted.
If you are from Europe and the airline does not have them , they are all over the international airports.

It matters how deeply into Mexico that you plan to go. If it's a day trip across the border, a state ID will do.
