You are not going to experience the "real" Mexico in San Miguel de Allende...it is a big gringo retirement city, full of American and Canadian millionaires...not a typical city. The reality of Mexico City varies widely...there are poor areas and rich areas. Great , huge shopping districts, museums, great public transportation. you will need to be careful where you go in some areas, and will be perfectly safe in others. i would recommend you stay at Casa Gonzales...an inexpensive, but very nice , private, safe guest house in the Zona Rosa. See site below. The owner speaks English, and the staff can be very helpful to you. |

If you want a guide take a look to those in Hostel world, they give very good pieces of advice. I would also recommend you going to Queretaro or Guanajuato maybe for a week, and the other week in Mexico city. In the other two cities you'll be able to go shopping at the down towns which are really nice and cheap!
Probably whilst in Mexico you'll be able to see a bit of everything you want. Just don't go to Mexico as they already said it is a city for rich-retired US citizens |

My advice---forget Mexico City! The guide books tell you nothing for a reason. I was there for two nights in a 5-star hotel and I could not wait to get out. I suggest that you take the ETN bus and head north to San Miguel de Allende or Guanajuato if you want to experience the "real" Mexico. I promise that you will enjoy them much more than Mexico City.
PS. There is plenty of poverty everywhere in Mexico, so you won't miss it. |
