Actually, the Christmas season in Mexico is mostly between Christmas Eve and Jan. . In the U.S., after Christmas day...Christmas is over. Here, It is just really beginning. Christmas Eve, families get together. Christmas Day is a religious holiday, not a gift giving holiday. On January 6 is the Day of the Kings. Between the day after Christmas and January 5, children visit the 3 wise men at the mall, or at a nativity scenes in front of the local church to tell them what they want. They write notes to the kings and place them on the door posts of their houses. Then , on the morning of the 6th of January, "the Kings" bring them gifts and candy. Also, on New Years eve groups of kids, families, groups of friends get together during the day. One dresses up like old Father Time and one dresses like a baby with a diaper and baby bottle. They walk up and down the streets of town and one in the group plays a drum while another goes up to people with a collection can asking for coins. The whole point is to chase the old year out and welcome in the new year. At midnight, families get together and have a big traditional meal...it is like a family reunion with 25 to 50 people all at grandma's house for dinner at midnite. |

I only know the Christmases I experienced: since a lot of us in our family are used to American customs, we would break out the christmas tree and grill up carne asada. Then someone would bring the jose cuervo or herradura and THEN the party starts.
From what I know, it is usually just a big meal and family and friends gather around. Most common food is menudo, tamales, or grilled food. My family is from a small ranch, and a lot of people would go around to see the nacimientos (birth displays, you know, of the baby jesus).
People would travel from house to house and come see the nacimiento displayed all beautifly. Obviously each one has the baby jesus, the three wise men, and adorned around it is your choice: christmas lights, plastic farm animals, toys, makeshift rivers, whatever. Then like the Mexican halloween, you get candy and animal crackers, or at least that is what I got. |

When I lived in Mexico I lived with a Christian family. With them, we celebrated on CHRISTMAS EVE, NOT Christmas day. Christmas Eve is called "Noche Buena". We went to church for about 2 hours and sang spanish christmas songs, and then when back home and has a christmas dinner of tamales. On Christmas day we just hung out and went swimming. Christmas there is not as materialistic and is more about spending time with family and the birth of Jesus. No one really exchanged presents, only maybe one for each person. They also had a Christmas tree like we do in the US, a manger set up, and people also decorate their houses with lights like we do. The children are the ones who really get presents, but they get them on January 6th, which is "los reyes magos" or the three kings days which, as in the Bible, when the three kings brought gifts to baby jesus. Hope this helps! |
