As an American living in Cancun I can personally tell you that I am NOT given a hard time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is a tourist destination...the economy depends on people coming here...so you are very well taken care of.

On the other hand Mexico is not the place to act like an ugly American...it is not tolerated. I understand that the Mexican jail is not the place you want to go...

No matter where you decide you want to go respect your self and the customs in the area which you visit.

Loud, obnoxious, drunks get a hard time anywhere in the world. Young gringos who misbehave in Mexico are targets for problems with the local police.

Nobody, in touristic zones, gives americans a "hard time", specially in CancÃºn. Actually, there were many places thath didn't accept mexicans, now the law is forcing them to DON'T discriminate us. (In our very own homeland!)

In Cancun most of the hotels owners are from USA, and they want to earn in dollars...

But there are great places in the pacific area (one can still buy a house with strand very cheap in some places). All these states have wonderful strands, there are some states, which did not have the money to invert in promotion, like Michoacan ans Chiapas:

Ive been to Cancun 3 times. The only times I saw problems was on spring break but it was the policia just making a few dollars off students breaking laws. If you trying to go on a Sunny Vacation you got Hawaii(its America so no probs), Puerto Rico(American territory no passport needed), Jamaica, Dominican Republic, Virgin Islands, Bahamas. I love all these places. I think the Dominican Rep gives you the most for your buck.

They dont give americans a hard time. When i was there its was awesome. They are really friendly. A word of advice though try to avoid the taxi's and the buses if you can. They drive like its the auto bon. Scary.

Americans have created their own hard time in Cancun if they have any.
Personally I no longer even enjoy Cancun, as it might as well be Florida it is so Americanized.
The problem is that Americans go and get falling down drunk, make fools of themselves and make messes, often getting injured and frequently enough one drowns. Surely you can see why residents and people of other countries would tire of such a behavior, which is why the rest of the world has seemingly abandoned Cancun to the American students.

If you want somewhere a bit more pleasant, try Playa del Carmen.
