If you are an American or Canadian citizen travelling by land..just need a Birth Certificate and Photo ID. After June 1, 2009 you will need a passport.

Here is the accurate info. I am an American living in Mexico and just returned to Mexico by bus from the U.S. You must have a photo I.D. and your birth certificate to cross the border. Passports will not be required for land travel to and from Mexico until June 1, 2009. You will get a Mexican tourist card at the border. You do NOT currently need a passport to cross by land. The trip on the excellent Mexican buses will be very safe.....and FAR more pleasant than bus travel in the U.S.

Getting INTO Mexico is not a problem if you have ID and Birth Certificate. Getting back into the US might be.

Be safe, take a passport. Worth the headache of getting it to avoid a very probable headache later on!

Obviously you are going MORE THAN 25 MILES and you will be gone MORE THAN ONE DAY... so you will need a Mexican travel card and to get that you will need a PASSPORT. Yod didn't say WHERE you are leaving FROM but it doesn't matter... the bus will stop at the border and anyone without a travel card will have to go into the station and get their travel card and POST A BOND before being allowed back on the bus. Keep the paperwork from the bond because you will get the money back but you MUST RETURN THROUGH THE SAME PORT.. so if you cross over at Farr you have to return through Farr or you will forfit your bond.

When I went down a couple of years ago, they were checking for passports before they would let people on the bus... today, I can't imagine it's any better.

Sketchy AR5s
no, you need a passport.

Jewls
No. You can't even get into Canada without a passport these days.

It doesn't take too long, so if you have three weeks or so before you have to go, apply for a passport at your local post office.

It's about 130 bucks or so in total.
