I plan on driving to Morelia mexico in March 2007 from Chicago, any advice or information I should know?

I have a BMW, traveling with my two daughters (young) with my husband and my husband's cousin, both mexican. Is it safe? Any good or bad experiences?

take ALOT of water with you and make sure your tank is always full at every last gas station you come across. Have your vehicle fully serviced (walmart is great for that) . Also take alot of non perishable snacks. An Ac in the car is a must!! Oh and when you get to Mexico, don't drink soda or the water. The bottling companies just rinse out the soda bottles and refill them. GROSS!!

wow, that is pretty far away, but morelia is amazing. Really hot weather and some hige storms can come, so I would suggest staying in a place near or with a pool. Go to "El museo del dulce" it is really interesting, and u get to see how to make traditional mexican cany from around there, calle ate and other amazing thing. The town itself can become very crowded. Go to homeowned buisnesses, for example, on the art of laca, which is beutiful, and how to make cocuchas. If u r planing to take a cocucha to your house, wrap it WELL!!!!!! The artesanias there r really amazing, and def bring things back home.
Have a great time there, but I think if u r driving such a long way, get a bigger car!

Get insurance, don't drive at night, have the car paid for (registration must be in your name or have lien holder authorization - notarized) and have copies of everything needed to import your car.

Otherwise get some maps and plan your trip for route and stops

Make sure you get a valid license. After you enter certain states in MX they may deny your US license without a Mexican endorsment. Ask a TA about this.

Welcome to Mexico! I'm Dave, born and raised in Chicago myself. I'm currently teaching English as a second language in the state of Zacatecas, Mexico. The only advice I can give you all is to be extra patient and extra alert due to certain road conditions in specific areas.

If by chance you'll enter through Laredo down to Monterrey....then you'll most likely pass Saltillo and even Zacatecas! I only recommend that you have patience especially with kids since it will be a very very long road trip. I highly recommend Zacatecas. A very touristy city, very beautiful, lots of Americans and Europeans that season in March. Morelia is also very beautiful, very colonial architecture.

Stay in touch and I'll send you more info on specific conditions of roads in the state of Zacatecas.

Good luck and have loads of fun,
Dave

driving through mexico is always a risk. the police are assholes and will try to make some money at any cost. just be careful and smart.

The cops can smell an American a mile away. They will pull you over for anything. You either have to pay them or they haul you into jail.
Have a great safe trip and bring lots of cash.
