While the number of people in Mexico who speak English has increased, in most places, not speaking Spanish will be a problem.

However, I have travelled in countries where I didn't speak the language, but found a way to communicate with gestures, phrase books and find patient people. I did learn how to say, "I'm sorry, but I don't speak..."

You flag a taxi down and name the place you are going. Have it written in case you are not understood.

Get a phrase book. Here'e link to a good one that fits easily in your pocket:
Lonely Planet Mexican Spanish
http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FMexican-Spanish-Lonely-Planet-Phrasebook%2Fdp%2F1740594959%3Fie%3DUTF8%26s%3Dbooks%26qid%3D1228817249%26sr%3D1-7&tag=larpmasguidet-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=9325

You'll get a better response from people if you make an effort to speak even very limited Spanish.

Where'o is'o el taxi'o./ I'o want'o hamburger'o

DAVID!!!
for a taxi, in a formal way:
saven donde puedo agarrar un taxi? "sah-venn donne-deh poo-eh-doh ah-gah-rrar une taxi?"
english:
-you know where i can get a taxi?

or

Hoiga! TAXI! (non formal)
-hey taxi!

How to ask for a burger: formal:
buenos dias(hey, hello) me puede dar una hamburguesa por favor?
"boo-eh-nohs dee-ahs meh poo-eh-deh dahr un-ah am-boor-geh-sah?"

meaning, hey, can you please give me a burger?

Unless you're going to the big resorts on the beaches, you'll need some Spanish. Lonely Planet publishes a small, pocket-sized phrasebook called "Mexican Spanish." It will get you through the basics.
