For a very unusual place, go to Xilitla and see the sculpture garden known as "Los Pozos." (see some photos at http://www.flickr.com/photos/kellyhart/sets/79042/) If you go, stay in El Castillo hotel. (http://www.junglegossip.com/castillo.html) The hotel alone is almost worth the trip. The moutain scenery in the surrounding area is gorgeous. I've heard good things about Rio Verde, but haven't been there personally.
In the central region, Guanajuato and Zacatecas are beautiful cities. Taxco is lovely and the surrounding countryside is stunning. The state of Oaxaca has beautiful mountains and beaches.
Mexico is so beautiful. I'm sure there are many more places to recommend, but these are the ones I've seen personally! |

I suggest you consider San Blas, Playa Azul, and/or Pátzcuaro. |

I suggest you go to Oaxaca, they have many "virgin" beaches that tourists dont go to. I like the mountains, especially in Morelos and Guerrero... Taxco is my favorite city. |

Do some traveling around Chiapas. Beautiful jungle, forest, mountains, nice rivers, water falls, caves, interesting towns, great pre-hispanic ruins.
If you want a nice beach: go to Tulum. It is about 70 miles south of Cancun. Same beautiful water and sand, but completely different environment. Stay in a nice cabin by the beach and go hiking in the reserve or visit the ruins. |

The Gulf of California with some exceptions is still part of the wild Baja Peninsula...the desierto Vizcaino, also Baja California, just a few varmints for company, great for stargazing...in and around Campeche, plenty of jungle and wild life left. Hurry, its going fast.. |

As a long time Mexico traveler, not a tourist, I suggest do not go to any popular tourist places, stay far away from the beach resorts. |
