I do that. But I fly in, rent a car and travel around. I've driven from Mexico City to Chichen Itza and back and I've driven from Cancun to Oaxaca and back. I've been through 18 of the 31 states.
Ninety-five percent of the Mexican people are friendly and helpful.
Three percent work in the drug trade (but that mostly only in the northern states--pass through these as quickly as possible).
And two percent have a scam to separate you from your money or possesions.
1. First learn some Spanish. At minimum you want to be able to get a room (habitacion) order a meal (comida) and ask directions (direcciones) and understand the answer.
2. Buy a money belt you can wear under your clothes to carry your passport, tourist card, an atm card, a credit card and 90 percent of your money. Then if a pickpocket gets your wallet, he's only go ten percent of your money.
3. Refer to the hostels page (second link) for reviews and prices of hostels and the cities they're in.
4. Get a copy of Berkeley Guides: Mexico '97: On the Loose, On the Cheap, Off the Beaten Path to read and plan the trip.
5. Place an ad on Craigslist to see if you can find someone else to do this with you (there's safety in numbers).
6. When you get home, write a book about your adventures.

there are tons of pllaces you can stay at for less than $10 a night (furnished rooms) but you have to read and speak spanish to know what you are looking for....

I've met a lot of fellows down there that do just that.
No Spanish but are courteous, friendly, respectful. I'd stay away from any place within 100 miles or more of the border. Too many drug cartels fighting there now. Don't drive at night.
You can find inexpensive motels all over or RV parks and camp out.
Drive defensively.
Good luck....

You would have 100's of problems being a gringo & not speaking Spanish.
All the little towns and villages you run into without speaking Spanish would be a major problem. It would also be very unsafe. If anything take a trial trip to the Northern part of Mexico where English is known and you can understand the culture.

come to mexico, we make u feel right at home..

You definitely would have problems. Americans are a target for sure in mexico. Larger resorts are nice in mexico but once you wander into town or the countryside you have a big bullseye on your back. Be careful if you go. Really.
