Madmunk

I want to come from Texas to Guadalajara to attend a Spanish Language Cram school. school names? Rents? ?

Always been fascinated with that mile-high city. I've never seen it though. I'd like to stay there about three months which I figure will be enough time to learn enough Spanish to get by anyplace in Mexico.
Additional Details
Thanks DF. I'm gonna leave this up for a while and see whatelse I can learn.

Hi Madmunk: I love Guadalajar too, lived there for a year and visit at least twice a year.
Here you have a couple of links:
Private language center:
http://www.internationalcenter.com/web/partnet/mexico/otros_idiomas/en/sitio_en_home.html

University, the info is not in English but there's an email to contact them, I'd figure somebody speaks English there:
http://www.uag.mx/12/ciies.html

The nicest part of town is Zapopan, not towards downtown "centro" though. I think it's better for you to look for something near the school, it is a big city. Maybe stay at a hotel for a week and then look for something interesting walking around the area where the school is.
Hope you get to make your dream come true.

I've been thinking about doing this myself. I;ve been looking at IMAC in GDL. Click the link below and search their website. They can put up in a local family's home for pretty cheap--click their accomodations link. And they've got an 800 number, you could call and ask questions.

I lived in Guadalajara for 6 years and loved it. There are lots of English schools, but not so many Spanish schools. I paid for a one room apartment $80/mo. That was not in a "trendy" part of town, but if you look around it should be easy to get that price. Look online for cuartos en renta. You should get someone who speaks some Spanish to help you get things set up.

I do not recomend IMAC, as English School it's not a very good school, so I don't think it's different for Spanish.

You can try
Foreign Student Study Center - University of Guadalajara - Spanish programs for different levels. Calle Guanajuato 1047
011-52 (33) 3853-0040

And finally you can try easyroomate o compartodepa.com to find someone to live with, or you can come here rent a cheap room in a downtown hotel for a week and find the right place for you.

Good look, and enjoy Guadalajara, you will not regret.

Find your school first and go out walking around the neighborhood. You will see signs in the window that say "se renta." I totally agree about staying in a hotel for a week or so till you can get a feel for the place. If I were you I'd check with the school itself. Likely someone there, either staff or student can make a recommendation. As always with any new city, taxi drivers are a great source for inside info. Don't be shy about asking and don't forget to tip when you get the info you need. 20 or 50 pesos is usually good. With the great food, great climate, and nice people I think you are choosing the best city in Mexico. As far as rent goes, I live in Providencia, which is a pretty nice area and we pay 5000 pesos per month for two bedrooms.

I would also recommend going to the Universidad de Guadalajara.

Its the state university, and it is one of the best in the country. They have a long time language program, and I think you should check it out.

For general info check out:

http://www.cepe.udg.mx/ (its in english)

And here is the direct link to their fees

http://www.cepe.udg.mx/calendar_fees_f.html

if you are a student you can even get credit transfered.

just check out all the things in the page, you will find that they will provide you with ALOT of things, like free wifi internet, super cheap computer labs if you dont have a laptop, medical services, if you are the kind of person who likes to do volunteer work, you can even enroll into several programs, helping blind kids, aids kids, orphanage kids, etc

They also do currency exchange for no extra fees.

and rewarding the place to live they offer the following

Homestay

We have about 250 family homes available offering accommodation to students who wish to develop their language study through total immersion. These offer single or shared rooms, three meals a day and access to virtually all home facilities.

I would recommend this a lot, since you would be inmerse in a spanish talking house, and would be eating real mexican food with out having to pay more for it ;)

CEPE BED & BREAKFAST

Students who prefer greater independence may opt for our Guest House. This has 24 rooms, each with its own private bathroom. Rooms can be occupied by one student or shared by two.

I dont know if they have kitchen and things for you to cook, but, considering that food is so cheap here compare than in the States, maybe you would just like to eat in places, rather than cooking. If you keep off fancy restaurants you can easily have a great full meal for 5-7 dollars (including drink ;), specially now that the currency conversion benefits you. (i great meal will cost arround 50-100 pesos, a nice meal in a taco stand or a market place will usually set you back 20-40 pesos, thats less than $5 dollars! And im not talking macdonalds kind of meal, i mean a real meal)

heres there spanish learning program (cus they offer tons of other classes too, you can take several)

http://www.cepe.udg.mx/courses.html

luck!
