I already did all the home work for you. I'm also going to Guadalajara and leaving from Southern California. Here's my itinerary.
I'm leaving around 7:00 am and arriving in Hermosillo around 7:00 pm. I'll be staying at Hotel San Martin. It will cost me $60.00 dollars for a one night stay. This hotel is located in the hotel zone and it has a restaurant.
The next morning I'll be leaving Hermosillo around 8:00 am and heading towards Mazatlan. I will arrive there around 5:00 p.m. I plan to stay at the Sands Arenas Hotel. This one costs another $60.00. This hotel is next to the beach and this price includes a room with a view of the beach.
On my last day I'll be leaving also around 8:00 am and I will be arriving in Guadalajara around 3:00 pm.
You will pay $100.00 dollars in toll fees, $150-200 in gas depending on your vehicle. Insurance for one month is between $150-$250 depending on your vehicle. Vehicle permit is $50.00 dollars. I would recommend you get it on-line. It took 1 week to receive it via FedEx. |

I live in Tijuana, México and it takes 30 hours (non stop) from Tijuana to Guadalajara....!!!!
You should leave early (6:00 AM) and drive 12-13 hours to Hermosillo and stay there its a big city (+1 million people), then leave Hermosillo an drive to Culiacán (10-12 hours) an stay there, and finally, drive to Guadalajara......... |

I'm about to do this trip, by the end of the month, my friend did it a couple of months ago, and her recommendation is to do it in one straight shot, cross the border in Ciudad Juarez, and use the toll roads, a lot safer than the carretera abierta, it should take you about 19 to 20 hours, with out stopping, the cost of the trip: I have no idea, I didn't ask her. |

IT TAKES ABOUT 3-4 DAYS DEPENDING ON HOW FAST YOU GO. THIS IS HOW...TAKE I-10 DOWN TO TUCSON AND GRAB THE I-19 TO NOGALES AZ. IF TIRED, SLEEP THERE. IN THE EARLY MORNING GO FORWARD AND GO TAKE OUT YOUR TRAVEL PERMIT FOR YOU AND YOUR CAR. YOU NEED PASSPORT FOR YOU, PINKSLIP AND CREDITCARD FOR YOUR CAR AND TAKE OUT THE NATIONAL ONE FOR YOU TO GO ALL THRU MEXICO WITHOUT NOT ONE PROBLEM.
YOU GO DOWN ALL THRU SONORA AND PASS ON THRU THE STATE OF SINALOA WHERE YOU DRIVE TO REST IN MAZATLAN. SLEEP IT OFF AND YOUR LIKE 9 HOURS AWAY. WAKE UP AND DRIVE TILL YOU GET THERE.
ALONG THE WAY YOU WILL FACE COUNTLESS CHECKPOINTS SEARCHING FOR GUNS AND DRUGS AND IT IS FARE TO WARN YOU THAT YOU CAN GET SET UP |

Don't drive at night and don't drive when you are tired. If you are not going to pay for hotels ... park in a Pemex parking lot (you might offer the attendant 20-30 pesos).
3 days minimum. Tolls cost about $70. Auto importation around $40. Hotels around $35. Auto insurance $100+
Nogales and south on hyway 15 to Guadalajara |
