Ok this is getting a little cray, why are you asking this question, it is on here at least 10 times a day.
Mexico is as safe as you want it to be, I can go to any town in the USA and get killed so is the USA not safe to travel to? |

At this time, the US consulate is advising Americans NOT to travel in Mexico. There is a rash of kidnappings and murders. Play it safe. Honeymoon in Hawaii!!!
**************************************...
Hey Ms. Hawaii I'd like to know where you get your information from because it's incorrect. You need to look at the actual release from the State Dept.
The violence is over 2000 miles away from Cancun & Riviera Maya (an example distance from Vegas to New York City)
Areas that are targeted are Juarez, Tijuana, areas bordering El Paso. The closets resort destination to the violence is Mazatlan which is about 400 miles away.
People are reacting out of fear, confusion and misinformation. The media especially CNN has blown the problems up and sensationalized it for ratings.
The average person does not realize how large of a country Mexico is.
Military Police in the resort areas are there to combat drug selling to tourist and some trafficking not due to drug cartel activity
Excursions are safe
Every resort is gated/guarded and has been that way for years
Less than 1% of the 22.6 million people (18 million Americans) that visited Mexico in 2008 had a problem when visiting.
There is no difference in Riviera Maya and Cancun from the day before the alert and the the day after at the resort areas since the alert was issued. |

Go to a big touristy spot....I suggest Cabo San Lucas at the tip of Baja....great place....any crime is usually petty theft from opportunity....
The drug wars are between the cartels and the Federales....tourists sometimes get involved when they try to buy drugs or be "mules", etc...and usually at or near the border and certain states like Sinaloa.
Otherwise, big touristy spots (Cabo, La Paz, Mazatlan, Puerto Vallarta) are usually safer than L.A., New Orleans, NYC or Miami....
Use travelers Common sense....... |

You have no reason to fear traveling in or visiting Mexico. |

I just posted this on another person's answers who were asking about Cancun and a honeymoon and I'll repost it here. In general my advice would be that you go to one of the more major touristy areas like Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Cozumel, Puerto Vallarta, or Mazatlan.
No!!! Go!! I'm very American looking and right now I'm living in one of the Northern Mexican border states where all this crap is going on, I have never felt unsafe living here or anywhere in Mexico, and I've traveled around quite a bit. The travel advisories are for the northern Mexico states, not for Cancun.
Everything that is going on is going on in the North: Cancun and Playa del Carmen aren't being affected by this crap. Unless you are going to be looking for illegal substances or activities or you go around waving thousands of dollars you will barely even know that anything unusual is going on. The people who are doing this aren't targeting random people. Those who have been killed etc. in this 'war' are because they are in the drug trade, have something to do with it or have managed to piss somebody in the drug trade off (journalists who are writing about the 'war' etc.). Civilians aren't the target, and unless you make yourself a target, they're not interested in you. Especially in Cancun there will be a ton of police making sure that the tourists are kept safe.
My advice: go. Ask the hotel about any potentially sketchy areas and stay away from them. Don't go looking for trouble (and it won't come looking for you) and please, if you're a drinker, try not to get too drunk. As long as you stay in the touristy parts of town you will never know that anything is going on. |

Well, recently there have been incidents of tourists who have visited Mexico and have been either abducted or even killed. Dont let this scare you from going though. If you do go, make sure you have a group of people with you at all times and try to stay in public places if you cannot have a group of people. I would say for a honeymoon, it might not be the best idea for now. Think about your other options before deciding on Mexico as your destination. |

I wouldnt go. There is so many exotic and lovely places in Mexico. The sad thing is its such an imporvrished country, its not stable, there is little gov control on anything, and the cops themselves will take you straight to jail as a tourist if you get in a car accident or any other problem and its can take thousands of bribe money to get you out. Yes, I have a good friend who was prisoned for being too drunk and he was 6'7 and kinda scary looking since hes a giant to most Mexicans, and it took 7000 and one and a month in prison to get him out. I also had a friend whose parents got into a car wreck, the parents were both jailed, and the sister and brother were left on the sidewalk outside the jail, they were there for three days all alone, no money no nothing until the grandparents were notified by a passer by and they got rescued!
There are many other lovely places that are safer and smarter to visit for a honeymoon. Key West. The Great Smokey Mountains, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Catalina Island, the islands off the state of Washington all lovely and safe places.
In all of Mexico you can only drink bottled water, have to watch the foods you eat, Montezumas revenge would definately ruin a vacation.
Its a shame that the Mexican government cant turn their country around. |

Mexico is a huge country. Are you honeymooning in Ciudad Juarez? Then I wouldn't go (though chances are nothing would happen to you anyway). But if you are going to a touristy area, go... remember that bad things can happen anywhere (in the past month, there have been shootings in Alabama and Florida that I remember) and that the dangers in Mexico are related to drug cartels who are fighting each other and the police and couldn't care less about tourists!
I'm in Ensenada right now - 70 miles from Tijuana - and I'm cautious but do not feel unsafe at all. |

There is a major turf war between the narcotraffickers from Colombia who fled to Mexico and the Mexican drug cartels in the border towns.
Best bet is to stay away from such towns as Juarez or virtually any town in Mexico that is near the border with the United States....and in the United States, stay away from El Paso, Texas, period! Moreover, perhaps stay away from Tijuana as well....until this war subsides somewhat. |

We just got back from a week in Puerto Vallarta. We walked all over the city's downtown, the beaches, even walked from the resort to the marina at dusk to catch a sunset cruise. Never once felt uneasy or unsafe. It's a beautiful city with wonderful people.
We also go to Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Cabo and Acapulco. All of them are safe. Just simply practice the same level of safety you would here in the states and you'll be fine.
For additional info, please read the USA Today link below. It ran in last Friday's Destinations section. |

It's not a safe place for Americans right now. Go to the Florida Keys, Hawaii, or Puerto Rico if you want a tropical vacation that's still affordable and close to home, but also a lot safer for you. |

I was just recently told there are mass drug wars going on in Mexico and to not go there. It's very unstable and unsafe at the time and I would not be caught dead going to Mexico any time soon. There are a ton of other places you can go and be safe!! |

It really depends on your location. Areas of Mexico where it is not a high tourist area are not safe right now. If you can stay in places like Cancun you would be better. I have been told that the drug war crimes are getting closer to these areas, but they are not anywhere near as bad as non-tourist areas. |
