I agree with Jim that the Pacific Coast is the most beautiful (and incidentally safest) part of Mexico :) South-Western Mexico is the best the country has to offer, hands down.

You can travel solita but I think it kind of depends on your means of travel and certainly where you are in the country. In the D.F. (Mexico City) area for instance, I would SO not recommend that an American girl travel around by herself, especially not at night. Heck, for a man it's not safe either. Same goes for Northern Mexico. Stay far away from any of the border towns (i.e. Juarez, Nogales and Tijuana) if at all possible.

Some great suggestions for places to go would be Guanajuato, Guadalajara (I Live There), Puerto Vallarta, Taxco, Culiacan or Mazatlan. All are very beautiful and safe cities that are rich with culture. Particularly in Guanajuato or Guadalajara you can break away from the typical touristy resorts and get a much better cultural experience.

Also - a big bonus is that in this area of Mexico (Guanajuato or Guadalajara) the Spanish is very pure and there are no heavy accents (as opposed to Northern Mexico or the Yucatan, etc..), so it is a great part of Mexico to learn and practice your Spanish!!

the country is rich with history, it's very safe to travel alone [male or female], food is good everywhere i've been at good prices , i just love the music there so i found it nice every place i stayed ,, if you try to speak with the people in the language they try in yours and they appreciate it , when travelling alone just keep your eyes open and walk away from trouble , i have travelled all thew Mexico solo and i speak very little of the language and had very little problems , i usually stay for 6 months and prefer the pacific coast , injoy the adventure and have fun

Durango, close to Mazatlan. Very friendly and natural.
its good if you hablas poquito o mucho español or nothing. Good luck!!!

We fly to Mazatlan every year..one year my wife drove there solo and had no trouble and it was a 2 day trip from Nogales at the US border. Had an overnight stop at Obregon, about half-way there.
Mazatlan is a friendly city and you can get by with pocito espanol. Our landlady doesn't speak a word of English, we know very little Spanish like you and we still can communicate!

There are also a lot of Canadians and ex-pat Americans living there.

We know people who went on a one week vacation, loved the place so much that they returned to build a home there!

I would head to Colima, Colima this is the perfect place you have the advantages that a big city has without any of the crime and its also just 30 min away from the pacific ocean. ITs awesome !!

Mexico is safe if you take the same common sense precautions you would take traveling in any major metropolitan area.

Get a copy of People's Guide to Mexico by Carl Franz. It has excellent advise.

For some wonderful, out of the way places, take a look at the Pueblo Mágico (magic cities) program. It was developed to spotlight cities of special historical significance that are not widely known.
