Depends on different circumstances.

Remember that the bigger cities have the best jobs. I've heard that parts of Mexico City are rough, so keep that in mind. Are you in tourism?? If so, most major tourist areas are relatively safe. Contact the Mexican embassy and get various statistics from them.

~*~ I suggest that you look into Morelia Michoacan or Leon, Guanajuato.. ~*~

San Miguel De Allende is safe and not too hot. Although I enjoy Mexico City, I would never live there. Too dangerous!

Cuernavaca - It´s a city but has town flavor and it´s near to Mexico City...the locals sucks really bad, but the American community is lovely and they will show you around
Queretaro - Lovely! great people, great place
San Luis Potosi - Nice place, too quiet
Toluca - Industrial city, people only work work work and the weather is quite cold
Puebla - City of angels (because its full with cathedrals), great food, good weather and affordable living
Veracruz - The best place on earth, jobs are not well paid, but you can live with what you earn so...go figure...the weather is hot and moisty, seafood from heaven
Guanajuato - Very medieval, awesome food, friendly people, quite colonial, you´re gonna like it

I hope the above help you to make up your mind, either way, it could be a great idea to take a couple of days to visit the one city you choose to live in...you will get a real idea of what is going on rather than just guessing.

I wish you the best of luck and Welcome to Mexico!

Well, not exactly sure what the three of you will be doing to support yourselves? If that isn't a question then I guess you need to visit several area's to see if something grabs both of you and says, "This is home". The obvious resort areas of both coasts but it would be well worth your time to investigate the interior such as SAN MIGUEL de ALLENDE.

Perhaps Cuernavaca City is the place for you. It is near of Mexico City, but with the ambient of a province town with a nice warm weather.
