I would really consider a different time of year.
June thru Oct is the rainy season here. Expect pop up thunderstorms , heat , humidity and mosquitoes that will carry you away.
Right now thru May is just paradise.

I haven't been to Mexico, but I travel alot. I use tripadvisor.com. Its a website where travellers put down honest reviews about places. Great website. Love it. Do a bit of search on there first so you get some honest reviews.

i dont know about any good hotels but it sounds like you are a very sweet boyfriend.

i've seen pics of riviera maya in travel magazines it looks amazing.

I have been twice, stayed in Riviera Maya both times. The best hotel i stayed at was the Eldorado Royale Spa Resort, 5 star, jacuzzi in your room, and 24 hour room service included. I last went in Sept 2008 and stayed at the Grand Sirenis, another awesome hotel, with jacuzzi in the room and included room service, rooms are huge! A little way from the airport though this one. But it doesnt matter too much. Enjoy! - I always research on Tripadvisor before i go also, so take my word for it, these 2 hotels are awesome. We ended up going on 5 star allocation on arrival, its cheaper, and a surprise where you end up, but when its guaranteed 5 star, you cant go wrong in Mexico.

I stayed at the Grand Sunset Princess last year. It is newly remodeled and has every kind of restaurant you can imagine. There is beer everywhere. People were friendly and it was in the Riviera Maya area so it was close to Cancun and a lot of other excursion spots. I highly recommend it.
