I will be driving through Mexico city in about 2 weeks. What are the best times of day / best days to do this?

I will be in an older Ford Econoline work van with US plates.

Sunday .... and if you are not familiar with DF - don't do it in the dark

If you can possibly find another route and avoid driving through Mexico City, it would be FAR better. Getting lost there takes no talent at all. Having American plates makes no difference at all. There are thousands of vehicles in Mexico City with American plates.

Check the last digit of your license plate. One day a week every vehicle is restricted from being driven in DF.

* Monday - no driving of vehicles with license plates with final digit of 5 or 6.
* Tuesday - no driving of vehicles with license plates with final digit of 7 or 8.
* Wednesday - no driving of vehicles with license plates with final digit of 3 or 4.
* Thursday - no driving of vehicles with license plates with final digit of 1 or 2.
* Friday - no driving of vehicles with license plated with final digit of 9 or 0.
Also, no driving of vehicles with temporary license plates or any other plate that does not conform with the above.
* Saturday and Sunday - all vehicles may be driven.
You may be stopped and fined if you're driving your vehicle on its forbidden day--this applies US plates or not.

Yikes.... I agree with other posters, if you can avoid it, DO. It's a nightmare driving in here, even for us locals who are used to the stupid and rude drivers, the lack of respect for the rules, the dishonest policemen..... "Best" hours for driving I guess are only after 10-11 PM and before 5 AM, that's when there is no traffic. Or Sunday early morning too.

Probably at about 3am. The traffic in Mexico City is really horrible and the other drivers are extremely rude. They love to blast their horn at you for the most insignificant thing. Many of the street names are on the sides of the buildings and can be really hard to read.

Seriously avoid 7am to 9am and 4pm to 7pm when people are going to and from work. Mexico City is one of the most difficult cities in the world to drive in. (I have traveled extensively)

Hmmm. Definitely not after dark! And not before 7 am since before that time it is still dark. During those time you can get mugged so be careful. Other than this you have to be careful with the traffic jams are around 5-9am (going to work) and 2-4(lunch) and 6-8(people going home) if you get stuck in a traffic jam you better have a good book or something since you could be there up to 4 hours.

Before you plan your trip you should check with: WWW.TRAVEL.STATE.GOV. or the Mexican Consulate to see if it is safe for you to go because of the "Swine Flu " out break that is currently a problem in Mexico City.
Mexico’s Calderon Declares Emergency Amid Swine Flu Outbreak
Share | Email | Print | A A A

By Thomas Black

April 25 (Bloomberg) -- Mexican President Felipe Calderon declared an emergency in his country’s swine flu outbreak, giving him powers to order quarantines and suspend public events.

By MARK STEVENSON, Associated Press Writer Mark Stevenson, Associated Press Writer – 36 mins ago

MEXICO CITY – As Mexico struggled against the odds Saturday to contain a strange new flu that has killed as many as 68 and perhaps sickened more than 1,000, it was becoming clearer that the government hasn't moved quickly enough to head off what the World Health Organization said has the potential to become a global epidemic.
