I would love to relocate to the area of Merida Mexico. I heard that a lot of americans live there?

I have four boys 8,11,12,18. My husband will be there a month and at work a month. Will it be safe? I am not the prissy type. I can do things on my own. I know I need passports but do I need a Visa or anything like that?

Everybody gets a visa (tourist) when you enter Mexico and the whole family should have passports. Yes it's a safe city

Best idea is to sign up for this Merida message board. Get answers from people that live there.

In addition to the website that Sparks gave, there's a good blog from a couple in Merida. See the link below.

I think Merida is a safe city. You can stay up to 180 days on a regular tourist card.I have recently seen several things for rent and for sale there. It can get very hot in Merida.
Buena Suerte!

Merida is a charming place but it is THE hottest place in Mexico.. The ocean is a long way. You will need a tourist visa. That is issued upon entry. If your lucky you will get 180 days and thats the maximum. If you get a &&**^%%(***^ customs guy you will get 90 days
You still do not need passports to enter Mex.(Without Vehicle)
You may to return to yours.
If you do not speak Spanish, If you are looking for Americans then you may want to look into "San Miguel Allende" 200 miles or so north of D.F.last I read there were 5000 Americans there and its up around 5000 ft or so in elevation.

Merida is very nice, statistically it is the safest large city in Mexico.

Never been there myself (I've never been to southeast Mexico sadly), but people I know say it's a very pleasant, sleepy little city. Very safe and not much traffic like in other places.

Oh yes, the weather there is known to be hideously hot and humid. If you're from the Midwest or Florida you'll probably adapt pretty well though.

Yucatecan regional food is great. Lime soup is a regional specialty and I've heard that they make a good deer stew. Yucatecan food uses a lot of black beans too.

If you wanna cool down a bit, they opened a brand new ice rink in the city just 3 months ago and I've heard the place is a hit with the locals because it's the first public ice rink in the entire peninsula (though they are building one in Cancun apparently)

Merida is a fun city of 1 million people. We spent three weeks down there last year. It is not a resort town like Cancun. It is common to see busses running with locals going to and from work. The city is very safe and I have never felt like we were in any sort of danger at any point in time. There are free cultural events almost every night of the week. The beach in Progreso is 18 miles away. Noche Mexicana is a great way to spend Saturday night at Paseo de Montejo & Calle 47. Also on Saturday you have free "Heart of Merida" festival - Plaza & Calle 60 up to Calle 53. 8 pm. - 1 am and is a must see experience.
You can see many performers at this weekly event. Catch the adventure in Plaza Grande on Sunday. The streets are closed off to traffic. Bands are playing, there is plenty of food and people are dancing in the streets. On Monday evening, enjoy an outdoor concert with traditional "Vaqueria" a Yucatecan dancing and dress at the Palacio Municipal on the main Plaza at 9 pm. Enjoy your time down there. Be prepared for the traffic downtown and the heat around May. Baseball season will start soon. Los Leones are a fun team to watch, ticket prices are cheap and good entertainment for all. Have fun down there.
